Dobson co-wrote Miley Cyrus' single "Start All Over" and in 2010 she released her third studio album "Joy".
Dobson was discovered and signed by Jive Records in 2000. The record label wanted to give her a traditional pop star image. Dobson, however, wanted more guitar and to include some of her own written songs. Jive rejected the idea, so she left the record company. She found herself singing in a Toronto bar at 8:30 in the morning. It turned out a CEO at The Island Def Jam Music Group was in the bar that very morning. He wanted to sign her. They signed her up on the wrong lyrics. She sang her song "Stupid Little Love Song" and what the people thought she sang was "Stupid Little Buzz Saw" which they thought was "genius".
She met producer Jay Levine through Island Records and they began working on her music. “He just really let me be free. He found something in me that he really thought was special, it was just fate”. When in the recording studio, she hung up inspirational pictures of Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, Coldplay, Jeff Buckley and the Vines, to help motivate her sound and to commemorate the artists who influenced her.
Dobson's self-titled debut album was released December 9, 2003 by Island Records and sold 307,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Four singles were released from the album; "Bye Bye Boyfriend," "Take Me Away", "Everything", and "Don't Let Me Fall". "Take Me Away" and "Everything" were used in the film The Perfect Score.
During much of 2004, Dobson promoted her debut album, appearing for a live performance on TRL and numerous magazine covers and articles. Dobson made an appearance on NBC's TV series American Dreams where she played the role of Tina Turner, covering the song "River Deep, Mountain High". She was also the opening act on Justin Timberlake's European tour. That July, she released a new single, "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)", which was also featured in a Tommy Hilfiger commercial starring the singer. The album was later reissued with that single added. Dobson also had a new song, "If You Walk Away", on the soundtrack of Raising Helen.
Dobson released "Truth Anthem" on the Much Dance 2005 CD compilation, a benefit for the Canadian branch of War Child. In April 2005, Dobson was nominated for two Juno Awards, Pop Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year; both categories were won by Avril Lavigne. In the summer of 2005, Dobson was in a public service ad "Make Poverty History", which brings awareness to child poverty worldwide.

Now I'm in better hands
I know this may sound impolite
But I'm in better hands
Knew I had to let it be
Losing your identity
You became the shadow
Drop a boy, got a man
Dude had to hit the road
This has become so uncool fast
Guess we weren't built to last
No
Three strikes, we tried
Now I'm in better hands
I know this may sound impolite
But I'm in better hands
His hands, this love
Fits like a glove
Three strikes, we tried
You know I'm in better hands (la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la, la)
Got over your nicotine
Habits and your skinny jeans
How they're always tighter than mine
You get under my skin
When you take me out for din
I paid the bill every time
This has become so uncool fast
Guess we weren't built to last
No
Three strikes, we tried
Now I'm in better hands
I know this may sound impolite
But I'm in better hands
His hands, this love
Fits like a glove
Three strikes, we tried
You know I'm in better hands
Every night I lay beside you
Knew there was more for me, me
Found someone who's nothing like you
Hands fit perfectly, ly
Every night I lay beside you
Knew there was more for me, me
Found someone who's nothing like you
Hands fit perfectly, ly
No
Three strikes, we tried
Now I'm in better hands
I know this may sound impolite
But I'm in better hands
His hands, this love
Fits like a glove
Three strikes, we tried
You know I'm in better hands
Three strikes, we tried
Now I'm in better hands (I'm in better hands)
I know this may sound impolite
But I'm in better hands
His hands, this love
Fits like a glove
Three strikes, we tried
You know I'm in better hands
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, hoo-ooh) I'm in better hands
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, hoo-ooh) I'm in better hands
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, hoo-ooh) I'm in better hands
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, hoo-ooh) I'm in better hands
The lyrics of Fefe Dobson's song In Better Hands reflect a situation where the singer has tried to make a relationship work, but it hasn't succeeded. The singer’s frustration and hopelessness are evident in the repeated line “three strikes, we tried” implying that they gave their relationship multiple tries before ultimately realizing that it wasn't sustainable. The singer then goes on to state that they are “in better hands” now, indicating that they have moved on and found someone better suited for them. Even though this may sound impolite, the singer knows that it is the right choice for them.
The following verse suggests that the relationship wasn’t working because the other person had some issues that the singer could not overlook. The mention of nicotine addiction and skinny jeans indicates that the other person was likely trying too hard to fit into a certain image, leading to a loss of their individuality, and ultimately pushing the singer away. The line “you became the shadow” suggests that the other person lost their identity trying to be someone they weren't.
Overall, the song's mood is empowering, indicating that breaking free from an unhealthy relationship is the right thing to do. The singer's journey from a failed relationship to finding someone who fits perfectly helps convey the message that it's always better to wait for the right person instead of settling for the wrong one.
