1) Felt was a 1980s UK indie band hailing from Birmingham, led by enigmatic Lawrence Hayward (or, just "Lawrence" for preference), and usually included guitarist Maurice Deebank and drummer Gary Ainge.
The band claimed to have released ten albums and ten singles in ten years but actually released 11 singles if you include their debut Index on Shanghai Packaging. They were influenced by, among others, New York band Television and 60's icon Bob Dylan. Forming in 1979, Felt never broke through to the mainstream, but enjoyed a substantial cult following. Throughout the early 1980s, Felt released a number of oblique, minimalistic guitar pop gems. In 1986 they broke through with the single "Primitive Painters" (featuring the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser), and the album "Forever Breathes The Lonely Word". Here, Hayward's trademark melodic songs are matched by a fuller sound - catchy organ lines from Martin Duffy (now with Primal Scream) and Deebank's cascading guitars feature throughout.
Following this, releases in 1987 of Poem Of The River, in 1988 of The Pictorial Jackson Review, and in 1989 of Me And A Monkey On The Moon, cemented Felt's cult following and reputation, before Hayward split the band up to pursue 70s-influenced project, Denim, and subsequently Go-Kart Mozart.
Felt's influence continues to reverberate in the music of current bands like Belle and Sebastian who have acknowledged their admiration.
2) Felt is a collaboration between emcees Murs (Nick Carter) and Slug (Sean Daley of Atmosphere). The group has released two albums so far, with the first one being produced by Murs' fellow Living Legends member the grouch and the second one with Slugs long time beat maker ant behind the boards.
according to the Rhymesayers website (their label):
FELT is a musical collaboration with the long-term goal of having sex with b-level Hollywood actresses. On tour back in 2001, Murs and Slug were in a van driving from Eugene, OR to San Francisco, CA. Near Weed, CA on highway 5 South, there was a heated discussion over which rapper had the better chance of sleeping with Christina Ricci. Murs and Slug decided to make a record dedicated to Christina Ricci (with the hope of either Murs or Slug succeeding in having sex with her). Built on friendly competition, it was also an experiment to see if a rap record would be able to help breathe new life into her career.
The duo is coming at it once again with Aesop Rock taking control of the production. Felt 3 A Tribute to Rosie Perez was released in 2009.
3) Felt was an early '70 band from Alabama. Their sole album, titled FELT and issued in 1971, is full of good guitar work and fine vocals, and has become a very rare collectors' item. The band's leader Myke Jackson also made a solo album.
4) FELT is a Japanese doujinshi circle primarily focusing on the Touhou franchise, comprising of around 10 members. Their first album released in 2010, titled Milky Wink. They primarily focus on Ambient and Pop but also do Electronic vocal tracks as well. In 2020, it was announced on Twitter that the next album after Last Wink is going to be their final album as FELT believe they will disband afterwards.
Hot Bars
Felt Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I spit hot bars, I spit on cop cars
I spit game to the chicks that belong to rock stars
I got the goods from uptown to Hollywood
So what you don't like us?
Your girl probably would...
[Slug]
In Murs' El Dora' listenin to Ghostface
Well hold up, and let me smile for a minute
While I look across the sky for a limit
Come and get it, I'ma ride this rollercoaster 'til the wheels fall off
And I'ma ride your Cali Roll until my eel goes soft
[Murs]
Take a journey through the mind of a one of a kind
Self-made motherfucker that's enjoying his time
On land, on air, on mics and on sea
Let it all just be, good times on me
It's California, fool, flyest breezies in the world
And we can roll up a bleezy that'll make your toes curl
[Slug]
and it goes Puff Puff Pass
So you can kiss my ass
Oh you didn't know?
You must have missed the class
[Murs]
It's sunshine, one-time, MC's with punchlines
Hit Elements on Sunday, put it on the frontline
[Slug]
and tell em all to make some ruckus
For the fuckers in the clutches
And the soldiers in the trenches
And the wenches on the guest list
Call Heaven, tell them "Got a situation
Murs and Se7en came to breakfast
And they left with all the bacon..."
(Chorus 2X)
[Murs]
We be the first dudes putting treasure over beats
Every measure be complete to make sure it's buried deep
Locked in your memory to provide a safe keep
So even if you diggin' what another rapper sayin
He can't break the seal so our music keeps playin
Living Legends, Rhymesayin so I know yall been waitin
So I open up the gate and, Slug made his way in
And we pimp this production as a present for the patients
[Slug]
Just—Jump back, kiss yourself
And thank your God for your breath and your health
Life is short and all days, surprise
Keep your nose clean, open your ears and your eyes
[Murs]
Call me Mr. President for short, a credit to the sport
Incredible in court, an indelible source
An immeasurable force, the strength of her force
And I'm pushin metaphors just to better y'all course
[Slug]
Here, vision is blurry, living in a hurry
No worries, you can call me Chicken Little Curry
Keep the channel spicy, flippin words like Vanna Whitey
And watch the contestants run in circles to analyze me
Here we go, Mr. Quiet Storm
Break down, take apart your heart and redesign the form
Tried to warn 'em, nobody heeded
So we succeeded at feedin these sheep what the party needed
(Chorus 2X)
[Slug]
But baby, I'm only boarding 21 and higher
You're kind of young, you should settle down, tiger
Take a little time to, reweave the fiber
Reach for tomorrow and let me borrow your lighter
[Murs]
Yeah, I freestyled with him-- and him too
But they still haven't gone through what I been through
Excuse me, what we've been through
Meaning me and you, see I'm just like you
Except I rock the mic and you work at a dot com
Or maybe you're a critic
Tryin to say the same line, but what it doesn't matter
Cause I'm still Murs and you're still bitter and
This is my verse and I'm talking to my listeners
[Slug]
So if you're Sleepless in Seattle
Disturbed in Pittsburgh
Lost it in Austin
Ann Arbor firestarted
Fuck me, Kentucky
You got me, Millwaukee
And the devil wore jeans in New Orleans
From Los Angeles – to Minneapolis –
We want to thank all of yall for havin us
Make it pleasure, make it sting
Whatever the way you swing
From the A to the Zing
I would never change a thing
[Murs]
R.I.P. Bigga B, Rob O-N-E
Says Unity and "Fly ID"
Wouldn't be here without them
So the love flows free
I wouldn't be here without them
So the love flows free
The lyrics of "Hot Bars" by Felt are a lyrical display of the artistic passion of the two MCs, Slug and Murs. Within the chorus, the rhyming of "cop cars" with "rock stars" establishes their lyrical dexterity. They cleverly use the metaphor of spitting hot bars to indicate their exceptional skill in rapping. They emphasize the ease with which they can impressively communicate to women who belong to rock stars. It's clear from their lyrics that they work hard in their profession, from uptown to Hollywood, while making it all seem effortless, and they do not care if someone dislikes them, as their skills are noteworthy.
In the verses, they also offer exciting and vivid descriptions of their lives in California. Murs mentions the importance of staying present in the moment and having a good time, whether on land, air, or sea, while remaining true to themselves musically. Slug describes California as a place with beautiful weather, and MCs with punchlines, and references their appearance at the event "Elements on Sunday" - a popular hip-hop showcase in California - to highlight their influence in the state. He also talks about some of the hardships present in California and those struggling with them, and the various ways they express themselves through music.
The song has several exciting facts to note. Felt is a hip-hop collaboration project that was first created by Slug and Murs in 2002. "Hot Bars" is a song from their third album, "Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez," released in 2009, marking their return to making music together after a four-year break. The song's instrumental was created by producer Ant, who is a regular collaborator with Slug in Atmosphere. The song has an official video directed by Isaac Gale, which features a constant stream of images that match the intensity of the lyrics. "Hot Bars" has become a hip-hop classic since its release, with fans praising Slug and Murs for their skill and creativity. As lyrically creative artists, both Murs and Slug have enjoyed bright and successful careers, forging their unique and respected paths in the independent hip-hop genre.
