In 2005 Fernandez & Wright gave life to their purpose and started gigging covers from the 60s and 70s in a style that was fresh and contemporary but distinctly reminiscent of Jobim’s bossa nova. They played for just about anyone who would listen … at open-mic nights, weddings, festivals, wineries … and even at a birthday party for an 8 year old nephew! They held regular Sunday afternoon spots at the ‘Presse Café & Wine Bar’ in Elwood and ‘The Denn Restaurant’ in Northcote.
In 2007 the duo started composing original material … a first for both of them! After nearly a year of solid writing, they started introducing their songs to audiences at their Elwood and Northcote gigs. By 2008 Fernandez and Wright were ready to start recording an original album. While all 10 songs were written and produced by Vanessa and Steve, a friend and experienced music-professional, Rick Formosa, fulfilled the role of co-producer on the album. To add to this, some of Melbourne’s most accomplished session musicians and industry professionals have plied their skills and talents in the making of this album.

Further down the valley
Read the lines on the church's
Faded yellow marquee
“don't bother running;
You'll be hunted like it's open season”
cnd as all good things pass away,
I'll know it's for a reason
Territorial divisions and exit signs
Lie hidden beneath a sea of overgrown vines
Some kind of dream that i've lived in another time
She met me there, but i don't know her now
Visions born in eyes of scorn
Holding signs with ancient markings
She knew distinctly where she stood
In the stitches of time and geography
I was lost in the seam, eyeing the distant gleam
Of another region
cnd all the darkness that comes my way,
I'll know it's for a reason
Territorial divisions and exit signs
Lie hidden beneath a sea of overgrown vines
Some kind of dream that i've lived in another time
She met me there, but i don't know her now
Does she still believe in
Past lives now that we don't talk?
Well, i'd never ask that anyway
The lyrics of "Seasons" by Fernandez & Wright contain vivid imagery and metaphors that explore themes of change, loss, and the passage of time.
The first verse sets the stage with a sense of melancholy and uncertainty. The line "Drive through sky's contusion" suggests a journey through a troubled sky, symbolizing a difficult period or emotional turmoil. As the singer moves further down the valley, they read the faded lines on a church's marquee, which warn them not to run because they will be hunted like it's open season. This conveys a feeling of being trapped or pursued, perhaps by their own inner demons or by the challenges they face in life. However, despite the difficulties, they acknowledge that all good things eventually come to an end, and they trust that there is a reason for it.
The second verse delves deeper into the singer's feelings of being lost and disconnected. The mention of "territorial divisions and exit signs" hidden beneath overgrown vines reflects the idea that the personal boundaries and paths they once knew have become obscured or forgotten over time. It's like they are navigating through a dream or a different time, feeling disconnected from their past. The singer encounters a woman who seems familiar, but they don't recognize her anymore. This could symbolize a lost connection or a change in a relationship, further adding to the theme of loss and the passage of time.
In the chorus, the singer reflects on the visions they have seen, which are born from the eyes of scorn. These visions, represented by signs with ancient markings, carry a sense of mysticism and significance. The woman in the song seems to have a clear understanding of her position in the grand tapestry of time and geography, while the singer feels lost in comparison. They sense a distant gleam of hope or possibility in another region, but they also understand that the darkness they encounter is there for a reason. This conveys a sense of acceptance and resilience in the face of challenges.
The final lines of the song hint at a past relationship that has faded away. The singer wonders if the woman still believes in past lives, a belief that might have once been shared between them. However, there is a sense of resignation that they will never ask her this question, implying a distance or a change that has occurred between them.
Overall, "Seasons" explores the complexities of change, loss, and the passing of time. Through its vivid imagery and metaphors, the song suggests a journey through emotional turmoil, disconnection, and the acceptance of life's challenges.
