Ortega was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico near the banks of the Rio Grande. He started learning piano at eight years of age. Through his father's work with the United States Department of State, he also spent time in Ecuador and Barbados. It is from his heritage and classical training at The University of New Mexico where Ortega derives his sound, embracing country, classical, Celtic, Latin American, world, modern folk, and rustic hymnody. Fernando Ortega currently leads worship at Christ the King Anglican Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
His album Storm reached No. 197 on the Billboard 200 in 2002, and Christmas Songs reached No. 36 on the Billboard Christmas Album Chart in 2009.
I Need Thee Every Hour

Most gracious Lord
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford
I need Thee, O I need Thee
Every hour I need Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I need Thee every hour
Stay Thou nearby
Temptations lose their power
When Thou art nigh
I need Thee, O I need Thee
Every hour I need Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee
I need Thee every hour
In joy or pain
Come quickly and abide
Or life is vain
I need Thee, O I need Thee
Every hour I need Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee
Just as I am
Without one plea
But that thy blood
Was shed for me
And that Thou bids me
Come to Thee
Oh, Lamb of God
I come, I come
Just as I am
And waiting not
To rid my soul
Of one dark blot
To Thee whose blood
Can cleanse each spot
Oh, Lamb of God
I come, I come
Come, ye sinners
Poor and needy
Bruised and broken
By the fall
Jesus ready
Stands to save you
For love pardoning
Love for all
He is able
He is able
He is willing
Doubt no more
He is able
He is able
He is willing
Doubt no more
In this hymn, Ortega expresses his dependence on God and his recognition that only God can provide peace and strength in his life. He acknowledges that he needs God every hour and that God's presence can help him overcome temptation and make life worth living. The repetition of the phrase "I need Thee" emphasizes the depth of Ortega's need for God's love and grace.
The line "Just as I am without one plea" is a reference to a popular hymn written by Charlotte Elliott in the 1800s. This line acknowledges that Ortega recognizes he cannot earn God's love and grace but instead approaches God with humble acceptance of his flaws and the knowledge that only God's sacrifice on the cross can save him.
The final verse is a call to all sinners and those in need to come to Jesus, knowing that he is able and willing to save and forgive. Overall, the hymn portrays a deep desperation for God's love and grace and acknowledges that only through God can one find peace and salvation.

My heart hurts so bad. The beauty of these lyrics broke every string from my heart. I can't even begin to describe how fortunate we have a God who's merciful and forgiving. Even after, our sins brought him so much pain. Β

I hope that your heart is not still hurting, but the hurt can often come from God himself. I believe he sometimes wounds us to bring us to himself.
Peter Beadman
Before we were born he knew us. And loved us. He loves us always. Following him is not the price we pay for that love, it is a further blessing. Every hour we need him and every hour he is with us. How my heart swells when I think of that. I'm only recently given myself up to the Lord and wow. The peace I feel even though my situation has not changed yet I have been blessed with the knowledge that I have him no matter what.
