Plumb was nominated for the 2012 Mercury Prize.
After the release of Tones of Town, the group announced a break, leading to solo releases by the brothers (David's "Sea From Shore" under the name School of Language, and Peter's album as The Week That Was, both 2008), before reconvening in 2009. Both brothers have continued releasing music outside of the band: School of Language now has 3 albums and an EP, while Peter has worked with contemporaries Paul Smith of Maxïmo Park (Frozen By Sight), as well as Sarah Hayes of Admiral Fallow (You Tell Me). In 2022, the Brewis brothers created their own record label (Daylight Saving Records) which will host what they refer to as "extra-curricular activities;" i.e., new releases from side projects and other related groups (such as Slug).
All Field Music albums were self-produced at the band's studio space in Sunderland.
Other musicians who have played in the group in some form include Andrew Moore, Tom English, Kevin Dosdale, Ian Black, Damo Waters, Andrew Lowther, Peter Gofton, Mark Simms, Emma Fisk, Peter Richardson, Liz Corney and Pauline Brandon.
Shorter Shorter

And I was counting the reasons
I was satisfied
Everything was fine
But you should've never come
Shorter shorter
No time to spare
But I can never be sure
Shorter shorter
It easy here
You can blame it all on her
But you can never be sure
I was waiting in line
And I was waiting for something
That was years ago
I was pretending I knew
You should've never went
Shorter shorter
No time to spare
We will soon disappear
But you can never be sure
Shorter shorter
So hard to tell
If its cut and dry
I can never be sure
People say its easy to tell
Why do I find it so hard to
discern
Is it in my head? Or perception is dead?
But either way, I can never be sure
Field Music's "Shorter Shorter" is a song that describes the ambiguity and uncertainty that can plague our perceptions of relationships, love, and time. The song begins with the perspective of someone who thought everything was fine, counting the days and reasons for their satisfaction before someone came and disrupted their peace. The refrain of "shorter shorter" emphasizes the idea that time is fleeting and we should not take it for granted, but the ironies and uncertainties of life make it difficult to be sure about anything. This theme continues in the next verse where the singer waits for something they knew years ago, pretending to know something they, in fact, don't know. The final verse raises questions about the limitations of our perceptions, where what we think is real may only exist in our heads.
