1. Formed in the San Francisco East Bay in 1989, from the ashes of Isocracy, the Vagrants, and Crimpshrine. Filth was a hardcore band that would help define the "East Bay hardcore" style. The band combined the more upbeat, sometimes poppy guitar styles of Isocracy's Lenny Rokk with harsh screamed vocals, courtesy of Crimpshrine roadie, Jake Sayles. The rhythm section was composed of an East Bay punks as Mike-o the Psycho, on bass, Jim Gray, a Canadian who temporarily moved to SoCal, on guitar, the more well-known Dave (E.C.) Henwood of the Vagrants. Dave left the band after recording the Live The Chaos 7"(1990) and Toby was brought in to replace him. This line-up recorded a split LP with Blatz, known as the Shit Split(1991), which is now available on CD, containing both bands complete discography via www.alternativetentacles.com, and the This Is Why We Are the Drunks split 7" with Submachine. Toby left the band, and Joey of Blatz stepped in shortly before the band's premature 1991 break-up.

Lesson Learned
Filth Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When no one is left who the fuck you gonna call
Peasants always want a piece of the crown
Don't forget never shit where you sleep
Dogs like you get put down
Someone's going to wipe that smile off your fucking face
Someone's going to wipe that smile off your fucking face
Off your fucking face
Fuck your safe space
Fuck your safe space
Someone's going to wipe that smile
Off your fucking face
Your entitlement left erased
The lyrics of Filth's song Lesson Learned seem to be a commentary on entitlement, power, and the inevitability of consequences. The opening lines "Victims aren't we fucking all / When no one is left who the fuck you gonna call" suggest that everyone is a potential victim in a world where power dynamics are constantly shifting. The next line, "Peasants always want a piece of the crown," seems to imply that those without power will always be trying to take it from those who have it, and that this struggle for power is inherent in society.
The chorus, "Someone's going to wipe that smile off your fucking face," drives this point home even further, suggesting that those who feel entitled to their power will eventually be brought down. The line "never shit where you sleep" is a cautionary reminder, presumably referencing the fact that those who overstep their bounds or abuse their power will ultimately face the consequences of their actions. The line "Dogs like you get put down" is particularly harsh, suggesting that those who behave like predators or bullies will eventually be taken care of.
The repeated refrain of "Fuck your safe space" seems to be a commentary on the idea of creating a safe space where people can feel protected from the harsh realities of the world. The implication seems to be that those who seek to create a safe space are denying the inevitable struggles of life, and that this denial will ultimately lead to their downfall. The final line, "Your entitlement left erased," suggests that the entitlement of those in power will eventually be erased or taken away from them, perhaps as a result of their own actions.
