Free And Easy
Finch & Henson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walking amongst the flowers
The trees are my backyard
Down the lane, for missing friends
And the lonely one caught
And look across to the right bank
Where the crossroad lies
Hear distant tone of bell
Fane, baby cry

And I 'wanna be
I 'wanna be
I 'wanna be
Free and easy

Standing backstage now
The crowd has all gone home
It's been like a circus tonight
Better off on your own
The greater and there wanting me
Now walk hand in hand
Through the backdoor of our song lines
Throws out the band

And I 'wanna be
I 'wanna be
I 'wanna be
Free and easy

Almost tired businessmen
Come to the sea
All the money in the world
Not enough to be free
So, where would you be today?
If you hadn't been going
About the seeds that were planted when
You were still growing

And I 'wanna be
I 'wanna be

I 'wanna be
Free and easy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Finch & Henson's song "Free And Easy" depict a sense of longing for simplicity and freedom. The opening lines describe walking amongst flowers and having trees as a backyard, creating a sense of peacefulness and tranquility. The mention of missing friends and a lonely individual caught implies a sense of nostalgia and possibly regret. The mention of distant sounds, such as the tone of a bell and a baby's cry, further sets the tone of a peaceful and serene environment. The chorus of the song, "I wanna be free and easy," reinforces the idea of wanting to escape complexity and live a simpler life.

In the second verse, the singer is standing backstage after a circus-like performance. The crowd has gone home, and the sense of loneliness is reinforced. The mention of being better off on one's own furthers the idea of wanting to escape from complex situations. The line, "The greater and there wanting me," could possibly refer to a group of people wanting the singer to join them but not wanting to be a part of it. The final verse discusses tired businessmen who come to the sea despite the money they have. This verse suggests that wealth does not equate to freedom and simplicity. The song ends with the same chorus, emphasizing the strong desire to escape complexity and live a simple life.

This song reminds me of a wonderful close friend I had years ago - Keith was my boss, mentor, father-confessor, brother, shoulder-to-cry on and close buddy in the true sense of the word. At work we used to play tapes (these old small ones from way back when) and this song was one of our favourites that we used to sing together.
Keith was one of few very special people in my and my husband’s lives which have been so much richer for knowing him. He loved life and his favourite catchphrase was: “Stay loose! Keep your feet on the ground and reach for the stars”. I know that he has now found his own special star ‘somewhere up there’ when he was called to Higher Service on 2nd March 1999. I still miss him, just as I miss my hubby who was also called to Higher Service in 4 May 2010, and these two very special men in my life are now "FREE AND EASY" in a far, far better place ... may they always be "Free and Easy" in that place - among the stars somewhere???

Real nostalgia. We regurarly went to the Kegg & Tankard in Pretoria to listen to these guys (and others) playing live. I think their music merited global fame, but fate does not always favour the best.
