On a crowded beach in a distant time
A scene from the past, where a location surrounded by many people is seen

At the height of summer; see a boy of five
A young boy of five years old enjoying summer

At the water's edge so nimble and free
The young boy running freely and agile along the water's edge

Jumping over the ripples, looking way out to sea
Jumping over the small waves and looking towards the vast sea

Now a man comes up from amongst the throng
A grown-up man approaches the young boy among the large crowds

Takes the young boy's hand, and his hand is strong
The strong man takes the smaller boy's hand

And the child feels safe, yeah, the child feels brave
The young boy feels secure and courageous holding the man's hand

As he's carried in those arms up and over the waves
As the man carries him over and away from the waves

The lure of the deeper water in the sea is tempting

Let's move forward now and the child's seventeen
Fast forward to when the young boy is seventeen years old

With a girl in the back seat, tugging at his jeans
He has a girl beside him in the back seat of a car, tugging at his jeans

And she knows what she wants; she guides with her hand
The girl next to him has a clear idea and direction of what she wants

As a voice cries inside him: 'I'm a man! I'm a man!'
He proclaims that he's manly and strong

Now the man meets a woman, unlike all the rest
The grown-up man meets a woman who's quite different than others

He doesn't know it yet, but he's out of his depth
He's not yet aware, but he's going in too deep

And he thinks he can run; it's a matter of pride
He believes he can escape from his troubles, because of his pride

But he keeps coming back like a cork on the tide
However, he always returns, bouncing like a cork with the waves of the tide

Well the years hurry by, and the woman loves the man
Time has passed, and the woman has come to love the man

Then one night in the dark she grabs hold of his hand
One night, in the darkness, she grips strongly onto his hand

Says: 'There, can you feel it kicking inside?'
She asks him if he can feel the baby inside her womb move

And the man gets a shiver right up and down his spine
The man gets chills all through his body

So the clock moves around, and the child is a joy
Time passes, and the child is bringing happiness

But Death doesn't care just who it destroys
Death is no respecter of age, gender, or status

Now the woman gets sick, thins down to the bone
The woman is sick, and losing weight drastically

She says: 'Where I'm going next, I'm going alone.'
She comes to terms with the fact that she's going to die alone

At a later time, see a man and a child
A man and a child seen in another moment in time

And the man takes the child up into his arms
The man lifts the child in his arms

Takes her over the breakers
He carries her over the waves that break at the shore

To where the water is calm
And takes her to a calm section of the ocean

The deep sea is still calling with allure
