The Sound
Firescape Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here on the edge, here looking down
I see the reflections of you and I
Like burning pictures on the
Ground inside my room
Where the grass was never
Greener than the rooftop
Where I laid beside
With you, with you

This is the sound of our demise
And it will echo in y heart
Now, every night
This is the sound of black and blue
And It is coloring my body
Like the bruises that I get
When I'm with you, with you

Behind the door, against the wall
A vacant room, breath on your stomach
Claiming that I never breathed at all
We'll breathe in two's
And I'll hold your hand
As long as I can still
Stay here and lay inside
With you, With you

This is the sound of our demise
And it will echo in y heart
Now, every night
This is the sound of black and blue
And It is coloring my body
Like the bruises that I get
When I'm with you, with you

Tell the friends to hold the phone
I want you feel your heartbeat
On the rooftop all alone
I can hear your heartbeat

This is the sound of our demise
And it will echo in y heart
Now, every night
This is the sound of black and blue
And It is coloring my body
Like the bruises that I get

When I'm with you, with you
With you, with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Firescape's song "The Sound" describe a tumultuous and potentially abusive relationship. The singer is standing on the edge looking down, perhaps contemplating suicide or life-altering decisions, and reflects on the relationship they have with their partner. They admit to being together on the rooftop where they felt happiest or closest. However, the grass was never greener (metaphorically, meaning things were never better) than the rooftop, indicating that their relationship has hit a rough patch. The burning pictures on the ground inside the room hint at the friction and tension in their relationship. Though they remember those moments fondly, the singer is aware that the relationship is moving towards its demise. The line "This is the sound of our demise, and it will echo in my heart every night. This is the sound of black and blue" indicates that the singer is aware that their relationship is turning abusive, with physical bruises indicating that they are hurt by their partner.

The second verse of the song focuses on the power dynamic of the relationship. The singer is aware that their partner is exerting control over them, with implications of not being able to breathe or being breathless during intimate moments. The singer seems to accept the abuse or naively believes that it's love. The use of the phrase "We'll breathe in twos" and "As long as I can still stay here and lay inside with you" seem to indicate that the singer is staying in a toxic relationship longer than they should because of their feelings for their partner. However, the song ends with a glimmer of hope as the singer seems to ask their partner for a chance to reconcile or talk it out.

They were awesome! Firescape was the side project of Josh Partington, lead guitarist of Something Corporate. If you've never listen to SC before you should check them out!
