Incommunicado
Fish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd be really pleased to meet you if only I could remember your name
But I got problems with my memory ever since I got a winner in the fame game
I'm a citizen of Legoland travellin' Incommunicado
And I don't give a damn for the Fleet Street aficionados

But I don't want to be the back page interview
I don't want launderette anonymity
I want my hand prints in the concrete on Sunset Boulevard
A dummy in Tussauds you'll see. Incommunicado

I'm a Marquee veteran, a multi-media bonafide celebrity
I've got an allergy to Perrier, daylight and responsibility
I'm a rootin' tootin' cowboy, a Peter Pan with street credibility
Always making the point with the dawn patrol fraternity

Sometimes it seems like I've been here before
When I hear opportunity kicking in my door
Call it synchronicity call it de ja vu
I just put my faith in destiny it's the way that I choose

But I don't want to be a tin can tied to the bumper of a wedding limousine,
Or currently residing in the where-are-they-now file
A toupe on the cabaret scene
I want to do adverts for American Express cards
And talk shows on prime time TV,
A villa in France
My own cocktail bar
And that's where you're gonna find me
Incommunicado

Sometimes it seems like I've been here before
When I hear opportunity kicking in my door
Call it synchronicity call it de ja vu
I just put my faith in destiny it's the way that I choose
Incommunicado

It's the only way
Incommunicado

Overall Meaning

The song "Incommunicado" by Fish is a commentary on fame and the downsides that come with it. The first verse speaks to the loss of personal connections that come with being famous. The singer would like to meet someone but can't remember their name, and this implies that fame has made his life so busy that he can't take the time to remember important details about people he meets. He refers to himself as a "citizen of Legoland," which is a metaphor for a realm of fantasy and make-believe, suggesting that fame has disconnected him from reality. The singer also declares that he doesn't care for "Fleet Street aficionados," which are people who work in journalism, another commentary on how fame attracts unwanted attention.

In the second verse, the singer discusses his desire for fame but on his own terms. He wants to be remembered forever, with his handprints in concrete and a dummy in Tussauds (a reference to the famous wax museums). He expresses his reluctance to fade into the background or become a has-been; his goal is to remain relevant in show business. However, he also recognizes that fame has its limitations, such as being perceived as a "tin can tied to the bumper of a wedding limousine." The final lines of the song emphasize the importance of being "incommunicado," or disconnected from the world, as the only way to maintain control over one's image and avoid the pitfalls of fame.

I'm a hard core fan of Genesis but I felt very happy when I found Marillion, cause they went on with prog rock in times when it was out of fashion. Me as a musican is listinig to a lot of different styles, worn out, up to date or beyond. I was very happy to get the vinyl of this Song, then in London in 87. Still love it and yes, I love Fish!

This is a song which should by all means be irresistable for a Genesis fan. I mean, that keyboard riff and especially the solo could very well have been a section in the solo of Cinema Show.

@garetholdman

This is one of those songs... No matter how shit your life and be depressed as fuck. You can't help but smile and feel like a king.

@vennootje

Absolutely everything in this song is spot on. The rhythm section is on it like a couple of cheetahs chasing a gazelle, the synths are fantastically everywhere, the guitars are screaming, the production makes it all sound wonderful. But, as always with Fish, it's his lyrics and vocals that take it up to an incredible level.
