Understanding
Fist Benders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would like to dance
Maybe you would too
Sometimes life is fun
I am upside down
You are far away
Everyone's selfish
We all want someone
To share our story with
Hello, old friend
How are you
Doing these days?
It's been a while
Since we've talked
I'm not sure what I should say
Silent
Wave of emotion
Cynical praise of feigned devotion
Violent
Wave of emotion
Beneath a thin film of plaque
In the back
Of your mouth
Violent
Wave of emotion
Behind a thick layer of lies on the tip
Of your tongue
Violent
Wave of emotion
Grit your teeth
To bite back the notion
Tell me everything
You ever wanted to do
Tell me everything you ever thought
Ever knew
Dig through your memories
I know there's life behind those eyes
Like learning to paint
You can scrape together love and cry
Our expectations were taught
It's through no fault of our own
Still you can see their thoughts
And slit their throats
I'll tell you everything
I've learned of going away
Try to convince us both

That one day I will
Be OK

Overall Meaning

The song "Understanding" by Fist Benders is a contemplative piece that explores themes of loneliness, selfishness, and emotional isolation. The opening lines suggest the desire for human connection and companionship, even amidst the chaos of life. The singer acknowledges the distance that separates them from the people they care about, while recognizing the underlying human desire for understanding and empathy.

The second half of the song delves into the darker emotions that can arise when we feel disconnected from others. The repetition of "violent wave of emotion" creates a sense of overwhelming anger, frustration, and desperation. The lyrics describe the masks that we wear to hide our true feelings from others, and the toll that this emotional suppression takes on our mental health. In the final verse, the singer urges their friend to open up and share their deepest desires and memories, encouraging them to embrace vulnerability and find connection in spite of their pain.

Overall, "Understanding" is a poignant reflection on the challenges of human connection, and the complexities of navigating relationships in an often tumultuous world. The song combines introspective lyrics with a haunting melody, creating a powerful emotional impact that lingers long after the music fades away.

Your later paragraphs are basically it. Here's one important thing to pay attention to. So notice in the episodes, they never called it "bending". They always called it the "power of the element". Like you said, Wan was actually shown learning from a dragon. And in the same episode, the guy from the fire turtle was amazed by how Wan wields fire and described it as "using fire like it's an extension of his body".

This harkens back to even in the start of AtLA, Katara said that she wasn't a waterbender yet, despite having the power of water. Toph also described earthbending as part of the badgermoles' senses and their way of interacting with the world.

In a way, it's like bending is the art form itself and using it as an extension of the body, while the lion turtles just gave the innate power. Think of having a sword, but without actually practicing the art itself, it won't be that useful.

And after 10 thousand years, the distinction between bending and the "the power" became moot, like how meanings and symbolisms of legends in real life become mixed up over time. Oma and Shu could simply just be legends with inaccuracies. Or it was kinda right, if we're taking into account the true essence of "bending". Maybe they had the power of earth beforehand, and just learned to use it as an extension of their body.

Also, even in Book 3 Change, after the whole lion turtle "bending" origin had been established, Tenzin still referred to the sky bisons as the original airbenders. This was in S3E7 Original Airbenders :)

This would also explain the question of, "if they just learned from the animals, why can't nonbenders like Sokka just go observe them and learn".

So here’s a question I have that’s been on my mind since LOK came out: how does one reconcile the “original benders” vs the Lion-Turtles originally giving humans bending?
