I’ve been listening to all of Ms. Flack’s music with a meticulous ear this year. With each listen I always hear something new, ESPECIALLY if I have my headphones on or earbuds in. I have even more appreciation for her as an artist, musician, arranger, producer, and in some cases, songwriter.

On “Back Together Again” I LOVE her ad libs, as well as how she enhances the background vocals and gives Mr. Hathaway a little more room to do his thing. It really is an amazing song. A jam and a gem.

This was also confirmed by the song's producer Eric Mercury. He said Donny was having one of his spells and he sent him home. A few hours later, he was found dead and they were forced to finish the song without him. This is largely why you didn't hear him the remaining half of the song.

Spring 1980, Brooklyn NY. I was 17 and this song was climbing the charts. That was really the 1st Post Disco Spring/Summer but the R&B and Dance Music were still blaring from Boom Boxes and car radios in NYC. Adulthood was ahead but this song brings back sooo many good memories. Classic and timeless ❤😂

Rest in Peace to Donny Hathaway and James Mtume who wrote and produced this song for Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway!! (Along with legendary producer Reggie Lucas who was also from James' Band, "Mtume". (The night they recorded this song is the night Donny committed suicide. The song wasn't complete. Mr. Hathaway was tired during the recording and James Mtume told Donny it was ok and told him they will continue the next day, but Donny killed himself that night. James put together what he could from what they recorded. :( Rest in peace to two musical icons).

Oh man this takes me back. Back to the days when artist could sing and play instruments. I love that bass, then how those horns blend in…. etc. Not enough can be said about the vocals.
