I think I have another explanation, a contributing factor at work here. I think there's an element here which is similar to a phenomenon which often presents within a parent-child relationship as the child passes through adolescence and approaches independent adulthood. Initially, the child is young, little experience, and the parent makes decisions and gives instructions to the child based in pursuing the child's best interests. Eventually, as an adolescent, they reach a point where they feel a need to "practice", and to "prove to themselves that they can" make decisions for themselves. But.. the parent is still making decisions in the adolescents best interest.. which inspires the adolescent to try to make some OTHER decision "for themselves". In this period, from the perspective of the adolescent, "who made this decision" is more important than "is this the right decision". I think this dynamic.. the tension between a parent who knows what their child doesn't yet know and still wants what's best for them.. and an adolescent who NEEDS TO KNOW that they will be capable of making their own decisions.. is what most people describe as "teen rebellion".

I think a similar phenomenon is at work with the "conspiracy nuts" crowd.. they are "rebelling" against a neat, packaged, consistent "way things are" which is handed to them, in favor of some other, necessarily less accurate thing they believe "for themselves". For them, "THIS is what I believe, 'the THEY' can't make me believe differently" is more important than whether a belief is actually true. Believing stupid theories is a way of asserting freedom, which can't really be achieved by reciting generally accepted truths. Defying critics is a way of asserting strength ("you can't make me change my mind.. my conviction is stronger than your facts").

Ironically.. attempts to "limit disinformation" only reinforce the conspiracists beliefs and strengthens their resolve.. the efforts to "police misinformation" confirm the belief of many that they're living in an increasingly oppressive "ideological police state" intent on taking away their "right to think for themselves".

@Wordavee1 Science is a method used for validating cause and effect relationships in nature. Determining shapes and aspects of the ground is not a scientific method question. We can observe and measure the ground as flat and stationary.

1. An observer at 1 foot camera height recorded the horizon being over 10 miles away debunking the begging the question geometric horizon (earth curve).

2. For centuries seafarers used the sextant to measure elevation angles of stars in order to triangulate their location at sea. Elevation angles require a horizontal baseline (flat earth). You cannot measure an elevation angle with a curved baseline (globe).

The claimed proof that earth moves is observing the stars move. But we're told it's the Coriolis effect where stars are not moving but appear to because earth is rotating. If the Coriolis effect were true objects in the air would have the earth rotate underneath them. We don't observe hovering drones or helicopters with destinations coming to them. Flights from Charlotte NC to Los Angeles CA are not considerably shorter. So earth is indeed stationary and the stars are moving.

3. The coriolis effect is only concerned with the atmosphere, and gunnery, it has absolutely nothing to do with the apparent motion of the stars!

When the moon rises in the east say New York, if the earth was truly flat you would see the moon rise in the West at the same time in LA... but you don't.
The time difference of sun set does not matter I have seen the moon in Michigan rise in the winter at 12:30 am eastern daylight savings time, four hours earlier than Pacific daylight time- 8:30pm... it will be dark. Even standing high up in the Rockies you won't see the moon for 4 hours or so... don't believe me? than do this yourself- call a friend in LA when you witness the moon rise in NY and ask them to tell you when they see the moon.

@Bruce Macmillan What is truly sad is, if you can get to a part of the earth that is really flat, like the ocean or Kansas, you can see that the earth does curve, as the horizon is not infinite. If you have the ability to reason, you don't even need to be above the earth, to realize there is curvature.

@Bruce Macmillan the unobstructed view on a crystal clear day over the ocean from 30,000 does show enough curvature to make it obvious. You’ll see islands or other objects appear from the horizon as well. Per the comment above you can deduce these things at sea level as well.

It's because, not all humans are equally intelligent, nor are all humans equally capable of understanding all information they're given, even if it's put in simple terms. We're all different even in the smallest nuanced ways, we can accept that mostly, but it seems taboo to mention if we're all different by means of intelligence. I think they are having a hard time thinking outside of their basic senses. Like, if they think gravity is always down no matter what, it is harder to imagine it as something that can be different. In their heads, they would be upside down and probably imagine gravity pulling them down either into the sky or a void. I think our teaching methods with science is flawed and hence, results in this and multiple other flawed beliefs. Also some other issues too like learning disabilities possibly with a number of them that make it harder to concentrate as well. These have indeed become more common with the prevalence of technology access. With those, they are probably more likely to believe something that is a less complicated and easier explanation for something they don’t understand. So, mental health regarding attentions spans might also play a role here.

You can test this with a thermal camera or a cheap Infared camera. Works great on parked cars. Any car panel in direct moonlight will be colder than the same panel on the opposite side.

Quite so. The Earth's radius depends on where you measure it since the Earth isn't perfectly spherical and measurements are amenable to refinement. however, just because we don't know the value of R to whatever number of decimal places doesn't mean the Earth is flat. As I've said before, just because someone measures the girth of an elephant but gets it slightly wrong, doesn't make that elephant cease to exist.

I don't you'd get a unanimous concensus buy there are quite a few "cube" hypothesis over the years and the Egyptians among others had many levels that may work with your table queation. Many of the text that shoe a lot of alternatives are gone in one form of another lime alexandrite and others, but many family and other collaborations have extensive data often that trumped these. You have to assume the sun is 93 million miles away with parallel light rays, but the 93 million miles away sun is assumed to be that distance from assuming earth is a sphere in orbit. With a smaller and closer sun you will have sticks and shadow angles. The angles will depict where the geographical position of the sun is on the plane. Unfortunately, sticks and shadow angles are not a physical measurement of earth curve or earth radius.

If we have half a glass of water, and tell normal people to describe it, they would either say that the glass is half full or that the glass is half empty. But if you do the same with a Flat Earther, they would say that the glass is flat because the water is sticking on it

On an equinox, at Solar noon, on the equator, the sun is directly above (90 degrees elevation).
At any latitude, the elevation to the sun is 90 minus the latitude.

Try a simple test on the equinoxes. The angle between vertical down to the sun at solar noon is equal to your latitude.
That’s valid at all latitudes.
Only on a spherical earth is that possible.

Today, September 22, is the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, the Vernal Equinox in the Southern. The Sun rises due East, travels right along the ecliptic (the plane of our orbit around the Sun) and sets due West everywhere on the planet. I'd love to see a flat Earth model that shows how this could work without magic bendy light. But I won't.

Have you ever seen both a half moon and the sun both high in the daytime sky together? If they are both clearly in sight and high in the sky what is the shadow from? The shadow is supposed to be the earth between the two but NOPE. It isn't the earth causing the shadow. Also just four days ago the half moon had the shadow on the bottom half when the sun was high in the sky with it to the right. How come it was not a full moon with the sun clearly right there. And if the sun were shining on it how come the shadow was on the bottom instead of the left half? 0 0
