The Shrine / an Argument
Fleet Foxes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went down among the dust and pollen
To the old stone fountain in the morning after dawn
Underneath were all these pennies fallen
From the hands of children
They were there and then were gone

And I wonder what became of them
What became of them

Sunlight over me no matter what I do
Apples in the summer are golden sweet
Everyday a passing complete

I'm not one to ever pray for mercy
Or to wish on pennies in the fountain or the shrine
But that day you know I left my money
And I thought of you only
All that copper glowing fine

And I wonder what become of you
What became of you

Sunlight over me no matter what I do
Apples in the summer are golden sweet
Everyday a passing complete
Apples in the summer are golden sweet
Everyday a passing complete

In the morning waking up to terrible sunlight
All diffuse like skin abuse the sun is half its size
When you talk you hardly even look in my eyes
In the morning, in the morning

In the doorway holding every letter that I wrote
In the driveway pulling away putting on your coat
In the ocean washing off my name from your throat
In the morning, in the morning

In the ocean washing off my name from your throat
In the morning, in the morning

Green apples hang from my tree
They belong only to me
Green apples hang from my green apple tree
They belong only to, only to me

And if I just stay awhile here staring at the sea
And the waves break ever closer, ever near to me

I will lay down in the sand and let the ocean leave
Carry me to Innisfree like pollen on the breeze

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of "The Shrine / an Argument" paints a picture of a dusty and neglected old stone fountain, which has collected many pennies thrown in by children in the past, long gone now. The lyrics indicate that the singer is reminded of someone they care about as they throw their own penny into the fountain. The second stanza addresses this person, declaring that the singer is not one to pray for mercy, even though they have left their own penny as a tribute to the one they love. The repeated refrain of "sunlight over me no matter what I do" and "apples in the summer are golden sweet, everyday a passing complete" implies a sense of nostalgia and acceptance of the passing of time.

The third stanza abruptly shifts the mood, describing a dark scene in which the sunlight is "terrible," indicative of a negative state of mind. The imagery of the sun "half its size" hints at the internal turmoil the singer is experiencing, and the lack of eye contact when conversing suggests a feeling of disconnection. The final stanza provides a resolution to this conflict, with the singer envisioning a place of peace and solace, inspired by the William Butler Yeats poem "The Lake Isle of Innisfree." The green apples from the singer's tree belong solely to them, representing a sense of ownership and control over their own life. If they can simply calm their mind and allow the ocean, or the forces of nature, to guide them, the singer will find the peaceful, idyllic place they yearn for.

If you are - like me - spellbound and wonderous at this animation - it was created by created by Robin Pecknold's (Fleet Foxes lead singer) brother Sean. What a talented family.
