Rhiannon
Fleetwood Mac Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night
And wouldn't you love to love her?
Takes to the sky like a bird in flight
And who will be her lover?

All your life you've never seen
A woman taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven?
Will you ever win?

She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
And when the sky is starless

All your life you've never seen
A woman taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven?
Will you ever win?
Will you ever win?

She rings like a bell through the night
And wouldn't you love to love her?
She rules her life like a bird in flight
And who will be her lover?

All your life you've never seen
A woman taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven?
Will you ever win?
Will you ever win?

Overall Meaning

Fleetwood Mac's song Rhiannon was released in 1975, and features the unmistakable lead vocals of Stevie Nicks. The song is a tribute to a Welsh witch-goddess of the same name, and it tells the story of a woman who is as elusive as the wind. The lyrics are poetic and mysterious, leaving the listener to wonder about the true nature of Rhiannon.

The opening line of the song sets the stage - Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night. The metaphor is striking, and it immediately draws the listener in. It's clear from the first verse that Rhiannon is a woman to be reckoned with - she takes to the sky like a bird in flight, and she is both light and darkness.

The chorus repeats the same lines over and over again, as if to drive home the point about Rhiannon's otherworldly nature. The lyrics are haunting and beautiful, and it's easy to get lost in the imagery. The final lines of the song - Dreams unwind, Love's a state of mind - add yet another layer of meaning to the song, as if to suggest that Rhiannon is the embodiment of all our deepest fears and desires.

I had twin girls in 1980, and I had always promised myself I would name my first daughter, Rhiannon. Well I had to come up with a second name as well. So I decided to name my second daughter, Rachel. We lost Rhiannon when she was just 22 years old. Now when I hear this song, I imagine it is my little girl saying, "Hi Mom"

@zayscoastin

My parents got mad at me for doing this, so I guess they donā€™t know good music. Itā€™s hard being a 32 year old unemployed man in suburban Detroit.
