According to interviews on the writing of Rumours, the final section of "The Chain" ā beginning with a bass progression ā was created by John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. It seemed like an ending, not a beginning. Stevie Nicks had written the lyrics separately and thought they would be a good match; she and Christine McVie did some reworking to create the first section of the tune. To complete the song, Lindsey Buckingham recycled the intro from an earlier Buckingham/Nicks song - "Lola My Love", originally released on their eponymous 1973 album. Thanks to its use as a TV theme (for the BBC's Formula One coverage), the ending bass line is one of the most recognizable in the world, and although not released as a single, it does get air play.
The song itself has a basic rock structure, although it has two distinct portions: the main verse and chorus, and the outro. The song would be classified as rock, but shows the influence of hard rock, folk, and country.
The start of the studio version of this song has, in a very quiet whisper, the word "fuck". This can only be heard on tracks released on CD. Because of the limited dynamic range, it is not audible on the original vinyl LP, cassette or 8-track releases.

Running in the shadows, damn your love, damn your lies
And if, you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)
Listen to the wind blow, down comes the night
Running in the shadows, damn your love, damn your lies
Break the silence, damn the dark, damn the light
And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)
And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)
And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
The lyrics to Fleetwood Mac's song The Chain are about the complexities and difficulties of relationships, particularly romantic ones. The first verse describes the struggle of trying to run away from the pain and hurt caused by a love that has turned sour, while the second verse emphasizes the need to confront and address the issues head-on rather than hiding from them. The chorus, repeated three times throughout the song, speaks to the idea of a chain that binds people together, for better or for worse. It suggests that even when love fades, the connection between two people can remain, and that connection can be powerful and unbreakable.
The lyrics are open to interpretation, but they are often seen as a reflection of the tumultuous romantic relationships within the band at the time of the song's creation. The band was going through a period of upheaval, with breakups, divorces, and new relationships all happening simultaneously. The song is believed to have been written as a collaborative effort by all five members of Fleetwood Mac, with each contributing lyrics and music to create the final product.
Overall, the lyrics to The Chain speak to the universal experience of love and loss, and the way that relationships can be both uplifting and destructive at the same time. They capture the tension and complexity of trying to hold onto a love that may no longer be healthy or viable, and the deep emotional ties that can bind people together even after they have parted ways.
