New to Nashville's singer-songwriter scene is artist Fleurie, the musical moniker of Lauren Strahm, a 24-year-old hailing from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The French word, meaning "in bloom" was chosen by the artist herself, who wanted an alias that accurately represented her sound. With an array of musical influences, including Coldplay, Imogen Heap, Dashboard Confessional, and The Fray, Strahm cites that her goal in writing every song is staying honest and true to the sound within her and the story being told.
The first EP from Fleurie, Fear & Fable, was released in October of 2013. Though it bears some darker tones thematically and lyrically, Strahm manages to deliver them softly and quite vulnerably to the listener. Fear & Fable is a collection of carefully constructed stories inhabiting haunting melodies woven through organic sounds - very much so a minimalist approach but with sonic depth.
Since moving to Nashville and the release of Fear & Fable, Fleurie has been at work exploring new sonic landscapes and delving into writing the part of the story she finds herself journeying now. Fleurie has a new EP in the works for release spring/summer of 2015.

Hurricane
Fleurie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm counting every step as you climb the stairs
It's buried in your bones, I see it in your closed eyes
Turning in, this is harder than we know
We hold it in the most when we're wearing thin
Coming like a hurricane, I take it in real slow
The world is spinning like a weathervane
I am breaking down again
I am aching now to let you in
Seven times again when you are not awake
Seven times the flame, too much to take
The sky burns red against your skin
The world we know turns in the wind
Coming like a hurricane, I take it in real slow
The world is spinning like a weathervane
Fragile and composed
I am breaking down again
I am aching now to let you in
It's all we know, all we know, the hurricane
Falling slow, falling slow in the pouring rain
It's all we know, all we know, the hurricane
Falling slow, falling slow in the pouring rain
Watch it go, watch it go, we stay the same
And I don't know, I don't know how it can change
Watch it go, watch it go, we stay the same
And I don't know, I don't know how it can change
And I don't know, I don't know how it can change
It's all we know, all we know, the hurricane
The lyrics to Fleurie's "Hurricane" express the emotions and struggles of a relationship that is on the brink of breaking. The opening lines suggest a sense of anticipation and fear as the persona feels their partner's heart hanging in the air and counting every step as they climb the stairs. The line "It's buried in your bones, I see it in your closed eyes" suggests that there's a deep pain and sadness within the partner that they're unable to express or communicate. The persona acknowledges that this time around, turning inwards and keeping it all in is harder than they anticipated. This line, "We hold it in the most when we're wearing thin," suggests that both parties in the relationship are approaching breaking point.
Despite the challenges, the persona takes a step back and accepts the situation as it is. The line "Coming like a hurricane, I take it in real slow" suggests a sense of resignation, that the persona is bracing themselves for the impact of what is to come but chooses to take it in slowly. The metaphor of the world spinning like a weathervane portrays the sense of uncertainty and confusion that's present in the relationship, but the persona is "fragile and composed," suggesting that they are trying to remain calm and collected.
The chorus repeats the phrase "It's all we know, all we know, the hurricane," emphasizing that this struggle and turmoil is something that's familiar to the relationship. The final lines "And I don't know, I don't know how it can change" suggest that even though the persona is aching to let their partner in and find a way out of the storm, they're unsure how to do so.

First time in feed
Sometimes I get a nudge looking at the thumbnail to check it out
Pays to follow those curious inklings
Have found some exceptional music listening to those hunches
Like this one...
Like a hurricane, the song is deceptively, eerily calm at inception...
building up with ambient energy...
crackling with tension...
Ominous...
the calm before the storm...
Then...
CRESCENDO!!!
And the fury is unleashed...
Indiscriminate...
Destructive...
Inexorable...
Unappeasable...
Racing towards its climax...
Raging unsatisfied...
Morphing, dying, moving on
as it wills...
to the aftermath...
Devastating...
Overwhelming...
Inevitable...
The lyrics, singing and music = HURRICANE
Hauntingly beautiful
