New to Nashville's singer-songwriter scene is artist Fleurie, the musical moniker of Lauren Strahm, a 24-year-old hailing from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The French word, meaning "in bloom" was chosen by the artist herself, who wanted an alias that accurately represented her sound. With an array of musical influences, including Coldplay, Imogen Heap, Dashboard Confessional, and The Fray, Strahm cites that her goal in writing every song is staying honest and true to the sound within her and the story being told.
The first EP from Fleurie, Fear & Fable, was released in October of 2013. Though it bears some darker tones thematically and lyrically, Strahm manages to deliver them softly and quite vulnerably to the listener. Fear & Fable is a collection of carefully constructed stories inhabiting haunting melodies woven through organic sounds - very much so a minimalist approach but with sonic depth.
Since moving to Nashville and the release of Fear & Fable, Fleurie has been at work exploring new sonic landscapes and delving into writing the part of the story she finds herself journeying now. Fleurie has a new EP in the works for release spring/summer of 2015.

Out of the Blue
Fleurie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Notes in the air
Forget where we parked
Forget not to stare
Out of the fall
Out of the blue
I never belonged to one like you
Everything in life is like a dance with strangers
Right from the start your heart is waitin’
You'll never find love without a little danger
We stumble around with/to the music playin'
How do you know it's true
Everyday this life is like a dance with strangers
We stumble around with the music playin
You'll never find love without a little danger
Right from the start your heart is waiting
So how do you know it's true?
Calling the shots
Trading the view
Once you've been caught
You're caught through and through
Harder we fall
Harder we bruise
I've never belonged to one like you
Everything in life is like a dance with strangers
Right from the start your heart is waitin’
You'll never find love without a little danger
We stumble around with/to the music playin'
How do you know it's true
When it’s out of the blue
Out of the blue
Out of the blue
I wanna skip to the end
See life flash by in a minute, never in it
Wish I could pretend
I'm looking at you
We don't know where it goes
There's a story that's/here already been written
Oh and nobody knows
Nobody knows
The lyrics to Fleurie's song "Out of the Blue" depict a romantic and unpredictable relationship. The opening lines with "Notes on your car, notes in the air" create an atmosphere of mystery and spontaneity. The singer is caught up in the moment, forgetting practical things like where they parked and being lost in the other person's captivating presence.
The phrase "Out of the fall, out of the blue, I never belonged to one like you" suggests that the relationship has taken the singer by surprise, as if it came out of nowhere. Despite feeling like an outsider in love, they are willing to embrace the uncertainty and take a chance. The lyrics highlight the idea that life is like a dance with strangers, where love cannot be found without some level of risk and danger. It emphasizes the importance of embracing the unknown and being open to new experiences, even if it means stumbling along the way.
The chorus repeats the notion that life is a dance with strangers, and finding love requires some element of danger. It also poses the question of how one can truly know if what they feel is real. The lines "Calling the shots, trading the view, once you've been caught, you're caught through and through" suggest a surrender to love and a realization that once someone has captivated your heart, you cannot easily escape.
The final verse introduces a desire to fast-forward to the end of life and experience it all in a minute, indicating a longing for the intensity and fleeting nature of passion. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and uncertainty, as they observe that the future is unwritten and their relationship is a story that is yet to unfold.

I hear this and I wonder how someone just comes up with such a rhythmically and harmonically interesting song. You just walk around with this rattling around in your head? Amazing talent. The sudden and repeating secondary dominant, B major to E minor, is haunting and sooo gorgeous. Love it.
