Mountain At My Gates
Foals(폴스) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see a mountain at my gates
I see it more and more each day
What I give, it takes away
Whether I go or when I stay

I see a mountain at my gates
I see it more and more each day
I see a fire out by the lake
I'll drive my car without the brakes

I see a mountain in my way
It's looming larger by the day
I see a darkness in my fate
I'll drive my car without the brakes

Oh, gimme some time
Show me the foothold from which I can climb
Yeah, when I feel low
You show me a signpost for where I should go

I see a mountain at my gates
I see it more and more each day
And my desire wears a dark dress
But each day, I see you less

Oh, gimme some time
Show me the foothold from which I can climb
Yeah, when I feel low
You show me a signpost for where I should go

Through lanes and stone rows
Black granite, wind blows
Fire lake and far flame
Go now but come again
Dark clouds gather 'round
Will I run or stand my ground

Oh, when I come to climb
Show me the mountain so far behind
Yeah, it's farther away
Its shadow gets smaller day after day

Yeah, gimme my way
Gimme my love
Gimme my choice
You keep me coming around
Gimme my fate
Gimme my lungs
Gimme my voice
You keep me coming around
Gimme my lungs
Gimme my, gimme my
Gimme my, gimme my
Gimme my, gimme my
Gimme my, gimme my
Gimme my way
Gimme my fate
Gimme my lungs

Gimme my choice
You keep me coming round

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Foals' "Mountain At My Gates" paints a picture of a looming challenge that the singer is facing. He describes it as a mountain that grows more and more each day. This challenge takes away what he gives, no matter if he goes or stays. He sees darkness in his fate, and his desire now wears a dark dress. He used to see someone more frequently before, but each day he sees that person less. The lyrics suggest the singer is perhaps dealing with a personal struggle that is eating away at him and causing him to feel lost.

The chorus, 'Oh, gimme some time', is a plea for guidance and support in a time of turmoil. The singer looks for a foothold from which he can climb and a signpost to show him the way to go. The refrain 'You keep me coming around' suggests that the person or the collective sense of support he is singing to is playing a crucial role in his life.

The verses that follow continue to describe his struggle through vivid images of nature, such as lanes and stone rows, black granite, wind blows, and fire lake. He needs to make a choice of whether to run or stand his ground as dark clouds gather around him. He wants to be shown the mountain that is far behind him so he can see how far he has come, and its shadow gets smaller day by day. The song comes to a close chanting the plea for his lungs, fate, and voice. The song conveys a yearning for the support and guide to continue on despite the uncertainty ahead.

is a track about confronting and overcoming obstacles in life. The mountain serves as a metaphor for life's challenges, which seem to only grow bigger with time. The repetition of the line "I see a mountain at my gates, I see it more and more each day" emphasizes the overwhelming nature of the challenges.

The lyrics suggest that in order to overcome these obstacles, one needs to have determination and drive to keep going despite the obstacles. The lines "What I give, it takes away, Whether I go or when I stay" suggest that the challenges may take away from what one gives, regardless of whether action is taken or not.

The pre-chorus and chorus emphasize the need for guidance and direction in order to overcome these challenges. The lines "Show me the foothold from which I can climb, You show me a signpost for where I should go" suggest that the narrator needs someone to guide them when they feel lost in the face of adversity.

The bridge suggests that the journey may be difficult and will require strength and willpower. "Will I run or stand my ground?" implies that there will be moments of doubt in the journey.

The guitar solo and outro suggest that there is still hope and encourages the listener to keep going and stay motivated to face their challenges. The repetition of the lines "Gimme my lungs, gimme my love, gimme my choice" suggests that the narrator is determined to keep going and not let the challenges defeat them.

Overall, "Mountain at My Gates" is a song about facing challenges and persevering in the face of adversity. It emphasizes the importance of determination, guidance, and staying motivated to overcome one's obstacles.

This song helped me through my husband's journey with Brain Cancer. It was my sanity song.... The diagnosis was like this huge mountain before us, looming larger by the day, seeing the darkness in my fate. Sadly GBM is terminal. When he was on hospice, I begged for guidance as to how to deal with his impending death. Show me the footholds from which to climb. After his death trying to deal with the trauma brain cancer inflicts upon the person and their loved ones was like a shadow I needed to be further and further away. I'd listen to this song all the time just to find some inspiration, and also to cry to and release some stress and know that I'd be ok eventually. It will always mean so much to me!! The mountain is far behind me now, the shadow has gotten smaller and smaller day after day....
