The band was formed in 2005 by Philippakis and Bevan, both former members of math rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald, and Andrew Mears of Youthmovies. Mears left the band after their first single to focus on Youthmovies. In January 2018, it was announced that Walter Gervers was also leaving the band.
In early 2007, the band released the limited edition 7" singles Hummer and Mathletics, both produced by Gareth Parton. In the summer of 2007 Foals began working on their debut album in New York. It was produced by Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio, however, the band decided to mix the album themselves, stating that Sitek made the first master copy of the album sound like "it was recorded in the Grand Canyon". Yannis has stated multiple times during various interviews that Foals and Dave Sitek are on good terms, even though the copy by Sitek was rejected by the band.
Foals released their debut album, entitled Antidotes, on 24 March 2008 in the UK and 8 April 2008 in the US. The album was a commercial success in the United Kingdom, debuting at No. 3 in the UK Albums Charts. The album was a minor success in other countries, charting in Japan, France and the Netherlands. Non-UK versions of the album include the early Parton produced singles.
In August 2009, Foals started recording their second album at Svenska Grammofon Studion in Gothenburg, Sweden. The album, Total Life Forever, has been described by the band members as sounding like "tropical prog" and "like the dream of an eagle dying". The band have described the album as being "a lot less funk" than they had originally planned. The album was produced by Luke Smith, formerly of Clor, and its title is named after an element of Ray Kurzweil's theory of singularity. The band's frontman Yannis Philippakis has professed a long time interest in futurology, with it informing numerous songs on Total Life Forever.
On 1 March 2010, the promotional single "Spanish Sahara" was first played on Zane Lowe's show Radio 1. Foals' new website was updated that night with the release of a video for the track directed by longtime collaborator Dave Ma. On 6 March, the Total Life Forever site was officially launched. Puzzles revealed images, lyrics and sound clips of songs from the album. The last clip appeared on 12 March, and resulted with a password entry for the Foals' new website. The site was opened on 13 March and presented the whole new art concept and media including samples of songs, photos and videos. Lead single "This Orient" was released on 3 May 2010. The album was finally released on 10 May 2010. "Spanish Sahara" was later released as a full physical single in September 2010, featuring an edited remix starring the strings of London Contemporary Orchestra. The album was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize.

Give It All
Foals Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Give me the red light turning green
Give me the words but not the page
Give me it all
Give me the time but not an age
Give me a look but not the rage
Give me the feel for where I'll go
Give me the way it could have been
Give me the ghost that's on the screen
Give me the way but not the means
Give me it all
Give me something I haven't seen
Give me the red light turning green
Give me the words but not the page
Give me it all
I called you up
Three times last night
Running through the streets
Bloody, from a fist fight
Keep you warm
Keep you there
Wanna keep you all
See you there, wanna see you some day
As you look back, I'm pulling away
You caught the bus and I caught the train
All that remains are words in the rain
Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh
Give me the shade of a thunder cloud
Give me a good bye said out loud
Give me the day with no memories
Give me it all
I know you could be here with me
By the rain and the palm of the valley
But you're there by the tube stop in the freezing rain
See you there, wanna see you some day
As you look back, I'm pulling away
You caught the bus and I caught the train
All that remains are words in the rain, rain
Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh
So solo, I see you there
You fall like a fifty weight
The time goes
I'll be right there
I feel, I feel there's a fork in the road
Oh woah woah
Oh woah woah
The song "Give It All" by Foals paints a picture of a person who is looking for something extraordinary and unique that he has never experienced before. This is evidenced by the repetition of the line "Give me something I haven't seen" which forms the chorus. The persona seeks something but doesn't want to necessarily pay the price, preferring to have the words but not the page and give him the way but not the means. He yearns for the past, the present, and the future but doesn't want to be limited by his age. The lyrics also shed light on someone who is in love but struggling to maintain a relationship. The lines, "You caught the bus and I caught the train. All that remains are words in the rain" paints a picture of two lovers torn apart, and only their words remain in the rain.
The lyrics in the chorus "Give me the red light turning green" indicates that the subject of the song is ready to take on life, regardless of whatever obstacles or challenges may arise. He is willing to conquer all and take all. The song is characterized by the use of metaphors, especially "words in the rain" and "shade of a thundercloud," that create a sense of nostalgia and anxiety. The imagery in the song provides an insight into the persona's quest for self-awareness and meaning.

They managed to perfectly illustrate how the "heartache" feels, without being cheesy for a single second. This clip is golden. This is pure perfection.

@@RonaldRagn he's not wrong, I cried to this a few weeks ago from seeing this, it's a very accurate illustration of the feeling, not weird at all to relate to loss of love
@pomhubnz
It’s not heartache, it’s the heartache of loving someone with whom you have a violent love. That ain’t any ordinary love. It’s toxic, it’s lethal. It’s what opera is made. Eventually the choice is either the train, or the bus, or murder. And it hurts like hell to choose the bus or the train, because you want to be in that bubble of love bombing forever…. And dying together seems romantic. But it’s an illusion… it’s narcissus and the echo. He is narcissus, she is echo.
