Night Out
Foley Ellen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a Saturday night and on the lower East side
And the kids in from Queens have now taken their ride
Starlight in their eyes
Well they're sheek on the streets and they're struttin'
with pride
And their light on their feet as they hustle inside
They're all giggles and sighs
The club's hot and sweaty and heads start to stare
But nobody cares...It's their favorite band

But you, you're a loner heading out with the crowd
And everybody knows that it's kinda hard to get by
When you're so nervous and shy
You're just a loner heading out with the crowd
Looking for a love that could take you down with his
heart
On your night out
(On your...on your night out,
Night out
Night out
Night out
On your night out)

There's band posters all over the place

Overall Meaning

Foley Ellen's song "Night Out" is a nostalgic glimpse into a typical Saturday night scene in the Lower East Side of New York City. The song starts by describing the arrival of young people from Queens, coming to enjoy the atmosphere of the city. The lyrics cleverly use a juxtaposition of words to describe the confident, fashionable way these young people walk down the street. They are fashionable and light on their feet and oozing with confidence. They are entering the club with starlight in their eyes, full of giggles and sighs. All eyes are on them as they walk into the hot and sweaty club. It’s their favorite band playing, and everyone is cheering at their thumping music.

However, then the song's focus shifts toward the experience of a loner in the club. The second character is in the midst of the crowd but is disconnected from them. The character is shy and nervous, making it hard to connect with others while surrounded by the loud music, dancing, and lights. The loner is searching for love, which could take them away on this night out. The song leaves a bittersweet aftertaste, bringing back memories of when people used to explore the city, faced with endless possibilities, hoping to connect with others on a night out.

I love this album. This song should have been released as a follow up to we belong to the night in Australia, . It's certainly as good as, if not better than "The Motels ..Total Control" which reached no7 in the Australian music charts the following year. I think this would have made top 10 possibly no1.
Just sayin 🤔😁
