Prior to the release of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album Foo Fighters, which featured Grohl as the only official member, Grohl recruited bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear. The band began with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith quit during the recording of their second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997); most of the drum parts were re-recorded by Grohl. Smear departed soon afterward but appeared as a guest with the band frequently from 2005; he rejoined in 2010.
Smear and Goldsmith were replaced by Franz Stahl and Taylor Hawkins; Stahl was fired before the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999). The band briefly continued as a trio until Chris Shiflett joined on guitar after the completion of There Is Nothing Left to Lose. Foo Fighters released their fourth album, One by One, in 2002. It was followed with the two-disc In Your Honor (2005), which was split between acoustic songs and heavier material. Foo Fighters released their sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, in 2007.
For Foo Fighters' seventh studio album, Wasting Light (2011), produced by Butch Vig, Smear returned as a full member. Sonic Highways (2014) was released as the soundtrack to the television miniseries directed by Grohl. Concrete and Gold (2017) was the second Foo Fighters album to reach number one in the United States and their first studio album to feature longtime session and touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee as a full member. The band's tenth album, Medicine at Midnight (2021), was the last to feature Hawkins, who died in March 2022.
Produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, "But Here We Are" (the band's 11th) would release on June 2nd, 2023.
On May 21, 2023, some days before the album's release, Foo Fighters would officially announce that Josh Freese would be the new drummer.
Over the course of their career, Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album five times, making them among the most successful rock acts in Grammy history. In 2021, the band was announced as recipients of the first-ever "Global Icon" award at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, their first year of eligibility.

Life belonged to runaways
Nothin' here to see
No looking back
Every sound monotone
Every color monochrome
Light began to fade
Into the black
Such a simple animal
Sterilized with alcohol
I could hardly
Feel me anymore
Desperate and meaningless
All filled up with emptiness
Felt like everything
Was said and done
I lay there in the dark
And I close my eyes
You saved me the day
You came alive
Still, I tried to find my way
Spinnin' hours into days
Burnin' like a flame
Behind my eyes
Drown it out
Drink it in
Crown the king of sufferin'
Prisoner, slave to the disguise
Disappear the only thing
Bittersweet surrenderin'
Knew that it was time
To say goodbye
And I lay there in the dark
And I close my eyes
You saved me the day
You came alive
No reason left
Me to survive
You saved me
The day you came alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
I lay there in the dark
And I close my eyes
You saved me the day
You came alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Nothin' more to give
I can finally live
Come alive
Your life into me
I can finally breathe
Come alive
I lay me down in the dark (come alive, come alive, come alive)
Open my eyes (come alive, come alive, come alive, come alive, come alive)
You saved me (come alive, come alive, come alive, come alive)
The day you came alive (come alive, come alive, come alive, come alive)
(come alive, come alive)
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive
Come alive

Foo Fighters's Come Alive is a song about the moment when someone is at their lowest, desperate and lacking in direction. The verses are gritty and dark. They evoke a sense of hopelessness, with the singer feeling like he is barely holding on. He is an "animal sterilized with alcohol," and every color he perceives is "monochrome." The chorus, however, offers a glimmer of hope. "Come alive" is repeated time and time again, with increasing intensity, as the singer recognizes that someone - likely a romantic partner - saves him by just being alive in the world. He can finally breathe again. By the end of the song, there is a sense of release: "Nothing wrong to give / I can finally live."
The song is a meditation on the healing power of human connection. It is a reminder that when we feel disconnected and alone, we can find comfort in the mere presence of someone else. At its core, Come Alive is a song about the transformative power of love, and the ways in which we can be saved through human connection when we have lost our way.

Foo Fighters is the only band where you can find a song you've never heard and learn it's amazing AND your new favorite. And, this can happen over and over and over and over.
