Since the '80s when most oldies radio stations were bought by corporations, gems like this are never played anymore. Thank goodness I bought 45s and never forgot these songs. Today this makes my eyes watery. Beautiful lead singer and great guitar work.

I was in the Air Force 1965-1969, stationed at Clark Air Base, Philippines 1967-1969. This song brings a lot of memories when I was young and very patriotic. Us veterans were not given respect like today.

Frederick Miles. Well I left Nam ( USMC) in late October of 66. But I still remember hearing this beautiful song on the radio stations back home in Washington DC and aboard Ship ( USS Saratoga/ USS Wasp) and at the USO'S in Europe and back Stateside. With hundreds of thousands of Americans being called to duty in Vietnam, left a void for the young English bands to "Invade" here. From what I understand, there was less than 200 British fatalities in Vietnam.

This song has so many different meaning in my life. At one time I had three copies of the 45 but wore each of them out playing them on the old diamond needle players. Glad to be able to hear it once again. The CD I bought with this song on it just didn't seem the same without the snap and pop of the old 45.

Having a background in the mining industry this song strikes a note with me. The respect and teamwork amongst the people I interacted with during my career from the workers to foreman and middle management was something that stood out for me. I can imagine a worker having made something of his life wanting to take a step further to finding a life that would allow him to expose himself to develop his talents to a greater level. Beautiful song!

Awesome song and band! The band were from South Africa and recorded songs in both English and Afrikaans in the 1960s-1970s. Although I was just a wee thing when this song was a hit, I heard it growing up and loved it. It is sad that none of their recordings are avalilble on cd in the U.S. Still, this is a classic song! Always a favorite!

After much research I found the truth about this song. In an interview with Glenys Lynne (singer of Master Jack), she states that the song was written by David Mark who was a gold miner in South Africa and wrote it while he was still a miner. Mark went to his foreman (Foremen were nicknamed Master Jack) and told him he was quitting to pursue other things in life. He thanked the foreman and left the mine. Nothing about Apartheid, Drugs, Great Britain, etc., etc., etc.Thank you Glenys

She never wrote the song in the 1st place so she wouldn’t know what this was about. I did a short doccie on David Marks and won an award for it. Initially I wanted to do a documentary on 4 Jacks and a Jill but found their story to be wishy- washy when it came to the meaning of this song.I focused instead on the person who wrote that song & songs like “Mountains of Men”, a tribute to all those men who died digging for gold & left heaps of gold mountains around Soweto. David performed with black artists who were forced to play behind the curtains whenever they appeared in front of white audiences. Authorities forced him to wear a mask each time he appeared in front of black audiences. Yes, the song became an anti apartheid song, an anti war song and anti drug song. I thank David for giving us Juluka (Johnny Clegg and many more). As a young guy he loved Kieppie’ penny whistle and saw him perform in Jeppe Street, because Kippie was black he would get arrested each time. David wrote a song called “when jeppe was a two way street”, documenting what he witnessed. All those things some don’t want to talk about, He, we talk about

They are still performing. I went to a concert yesterday. The three original band members (including Glenys Lynne, her husband Clive Harding (base guitar) and Tony Hughes (drums)) are all in their 70's. Then there is a member who has been with the band for 39 years and a new member. Glenys still has a powerful voice. Master Jack is slang for a mine foreman. The song is about a miner telling his foreman he wants to move on with his life.

His name was Jack Wisuri and this song was his staple during that very stange but exciting time in our lives. Funny, the lyrics are still very true today - even more so. thank you for uploading this song. I was 14 years old in 1968 when my parents received the LP "Four Jacks and a Jill" from South Africa from a family friend of theirs. Perhaps unusual about it is that we were still living in the GDR - East Germany. I and my parents liked "MasterJack" very much, and today it's just as beautiful. The record still exists today, several years ago I burned the band's music on CD. I photographed the cover from the record case. And nowadays it's easy to get the lyrics to the songs. Back then We wrote down the texts from the tape - with who knows how many mistakes.

We have four cats we love dearly! Our wonderful Jack was at the ER Animal Hospital and diagnosed with very bad kidney disease. Because of constsruction I had to spend the morning waiting in my car. As I hung up with the vet and before they brought Jack back out to me, this song, Master Jack, was on 60's Gold on Sirius XM. Wow, how eerie! And, maybe a sign of good things for our Jack!
