Kyrie
Four Shadow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Kyrie Eleison... Kyrie Eleison... Kyrie...

The wind blows hard against this mountain side,
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide,
Setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old, it holds my memories,
My body burns a gem-like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine,
Is where I find myself again

Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old,
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road,
Or only wished what I could be

Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light

Oh oh oh... oh oh oh...
Oh oh oh... oh oh oh...

Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light...

Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Kyrie" by Four Shadow delve into themes of introspection, self-discovery, and the passage of time. The repeated phrase "Kyrie Eleison" throughout the song is a Greek phrase that means "Lord, have mercy," often used in Christian liturgy. This phrase sets a tone of seeking guidance, forgiveness, and grace on a personal journey.

The opening lines describe a struggle against external forces, represented by the wind against a mountain side, and how these forces reach deep within the singer's soul. This metaphorical struggle serves as a backdrop for the internal journey the singer embarks upon. The imagery of setting feet upon the road symbolizes stepping forward into the unknown and facing challenges head-on.

The following lines explore the complexities of the singer's inner world. The heart, holding memories, contrasts with the physical body burning with intensity, suggesting a duality between past experiences and present vitality. The reference to the "soul and soft machine" hints at the intersection of the spiritual and the worldly, where the singer rediscovers themselves.

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on youth and the passage of time, wondering about the choices made and the paths not taken. This contemplation of growing older and evaluating the significance of one's life evokes a sense of nostalgia and introspection. The repeated chorus of "Kyrie eleison" anchors the journey, with a plea for guidance and companionship along the road ahead.

The final moments of the song bring a sense of resolution and acceptance. The singerโ€™s invitation to "follow" on the highway in the light suggests a willingness to embrace the future with faith and determination. The concluding repetition of "Kyrie eleison" reinforces the theme of seeking divine mercy and guidance on the path ahead, encapsulating a deep longing for spiritual connection and understanding in the midst of lifeโ€™s uncertainties.

@@melanier3479 I always knew what Kyrie Eleison meant but missed knowing that that was what the song said, until 2019 when I found a video of it on YouTube that actually had the words.
Gives me chills a bit too.
Knowing that.
Changes the whole song, is certainly true.
Heard this song when I was young in the '80's, already loved the song and the tune then but could not make out most of the words.
Now I think of it as one of the "Kyrie" pieces of music although it is not an actual church song.
Beautiful words, beautiful tune, beautiful song, beautiful singing, beautiful video.
Glad to hear that you feel the same way.
Just thought I'd let you know. โ˜บ๏ธ

Most people have no idea how great the 80โ€™s were. It was an honor.

I'd be honored if some 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of SISTER CHRISTIAN by Night Ranger, AGAINST ALL ODDS by Phil Collins, and PURPLE RAIN by Prince in tribute to the era of legendary power ballads. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
