Oh No 2
Foxygen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Standing on the moon, I saw you, love
Do you think we'll be somebody?
Just standing all alone right in front of me
Do you think we'll see?
La, la, la, la,
Oh no

I'm not one for love nowadays
But anyway
I see your face is so fake
Justin is on the phone
Right in front of me
Do you think we'll be?
La, la, la, la,

(I was standing on the bed
Birds were landing on my head
Even though it's just a dream
I still don't know what it means)

Oh no, oh no, oh no

If you believe in love
Everything you see is love

So try to be what God wants you to be
And say that "I love you" again

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song opens with the singer standing on the moon, looking down at someone they love. This image is symbolic and represents a distance between the singer and their love. They wonder if they will ever be able to bridge that gap and become someone significant to each other. The phrase "just standing all alone right in front of me" suggests that despite being physically present, they feel disconnected from each other. The repetition of "do you think we'll see" expresses the singer's doubts about their future together. The chorus, "La, la, la, la, oh no," adds a sense of despair and resignation. The singer seems to be acknowledging that the situation is not hopeful.

In the second verse, the singer declares that they are not one for love nowadays, setting up a contrast between their present beliefs and past experiences. They see their partner's face as fake, implying that they are pretending to be someone they are not. Justin's presence on the phone highlights the distance between the two lovers. Once again, the singer asks the question, "Do you think we'll be?", suggesting their uncertainty about their future. The bridge, "I was standing on the bed, birds were landing on my head" introduces an abstract dream-like sequence. The singer is unable to interpret the meaning of the dream, indicating their sense of confusion and detachment from their own emotions. The chorus repetition intensifies in the final verse, expressing the singer's mounting anxiety and fear. The final line of the song, "Say that 'I love you' again," signals a plea for a return to affection.

Anyone else notice that this song kinda is like about a dude dying or something.

1. Heartbeat monitor and back chatter of surgeons. "Scissors please"
2. Guy is wondering why he's hallucinating and such.
3. People shouting oh no as surgery turns south
4. Continue to love this person despite him no longer being around.
Or it could also be interpreted as him saying to his significant other that they should move on. Be what God wants you to be (a creature of love) and say I love you to another one day again even though he is gone.

I dunno I might be reading into it but yeah that's how I interpreted it.

Alternatively it could be all of that, but instead of being about someone's death. It's about someone reminiscing about their loved ones death. And they're trying to convince themselves to not let go but ultimately decided to let go as the person would have wanted them to; this is cause the two verses middle verses are him talking about how he feels in the presence of people around him and how he's comfortable with them and rather than be present in the room of people around him, hes looking up at the moon and reminiscing about his love.
