Guiding Light
Foy Vance Lyrics

And waters run on either side
And my shadow went with fading light
Stretching out towards the night
'Cause the sun is low
And I yet have still so far to go
My lonely heart is beating so
There's a sign ahead
Though I think it's the same one again
But I'm thinking 'bout my only friend
And so I find my way home
'Cause when I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
Oh, well the air is cold
And yonder lies my sleeping soul
By the branches broke like bones
Well, this weakened tree no longer holds
Well, the night is still
And I have not yet lost my will
Oh and I will keep on moving 'till
'Till I find my way home
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
So lead me on, and leave me strong
Like the road I walk on
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
When I need to get home
You're my guiding light
You're my guiding light
In Foy Vance's "Guiding Light," the singer finds solace in an imaginary friend who acts as a beacon of hope, guiding them home when they feel lost. The metaphorical journey is marked by a widening road and waters on either side, with the singer's shadow and tired heart stretching towards the night. Despite the cold air and weakened tree, the singer has not lost their will and keeps moving forward towards their guiding light. The repetition of "when I need to get home, you're my guiding light" suggests that the guiding light is a consistent source of comfort throughout the singer's life, sustaining them during difficult times.
The lyrics of "Guiding Light" reflect the human experience of feeling lost or overwhelmed and the desire for guidance and reassurance. Vance’s evocative vocal delivery and the simple, yet powerful instrumentation serve to reinforce the message of hope in the face of adversity. Through his lyrics, Vance encourages the listener to hold onto hope and lean on their own guiding lights when faced with uncertainty.

I lost my grandmother yesterday and this song makes me think of all times I've spent with her. She basically raised me. She's my mentor. I love you please always be my guiding light.
@lisaaxe9062
So sorry for your loss😢

Not to take away from how amazing this song is...but it's so strange to see Foy without his moustache!
I was extremely fortunate to watch him play this in my local bar to no more than 30 people, was one of those moments that will stay with me forever. 🖤

That’s amazing. You’re so lucky. I adore him. Truly, I’m happy for you though. That must have been wonderful.

The anniversary edition has dropped but this is still my favourite version!

This song… I don’t have a guiding light like I did when I first heard this song on the Live at Bangor Abbey album in 2014, but now (Sept 2023), I still feel the power in it. It’s both powerful and hopeful, while also dropping me to my knees to just hold on… I’m so happy to see these other comments here and to learn that I’m not the only one so deeply affected by it. ❤️🩹

My wife miscarried in 2014, and it was a horrible time for us. This song (this very version) was the song I listened to afterwards. Every time I listen to this song, I think of my unborn child. I love you baby! I'll meet you one day in heaven!! - Dad
@willymosewage
+Ben Coelho God bless you. You will one day.
@SabrinaMRood
+Ben Coelho, I have two children in heaven: a miscarried baby and my infant son, and thankful that I have a son on earth as well. I understand how music can help you in these parts of your soul. All best to you and your wife, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Ben Coelho Thank you for posting that. My wife and I lost twins a week from viability about five years ago and we barely survived it. This song, and seeing how it touches people with such profound losses is a great reminder that even while drowning in the bleakest of darkness there is always light to show the way - You just have to look for it and hold onto it. I'll see them again, as you and your wife will see yours. God bless you and your family, Ben.
