Da Venezia arrivare fin qua
E salire le scale e frusciare
Come mazzi di rose
E il profumo rimane nell'aria
Quando la porta si chiude
Ed allora le immagino nude aspettare.
Sono attrici scappate da Roma
Che si fermano per una notte
O per una stagione
Al mattino non hanno pudore
Quando scendono per colazione
Puoi sentirle cantare
Quanti pesci potrei cucinare stasera
E chi dice Americani
Io mi chiedo che faccia faranno
A trovarmi in cucina
E se vorranno qualcosa per cena
Se quest'acqua di lago potesse ascoltare
Quante storie potrei raccontare stasera
The song "Il cuoco di Salò" by Francesco De Gregori tells the story of a cook working in a hotel in Salò, a small town on the shores of Lake Garda, where he witnesses the arrival of beautiful women from Venice who come to stay for a night or a season. He imagines them waiting naked in their rooms, and wonders about their stories and lives. The cook muses about the uncertain fate of the country, where people die on the wrong side of history, even on beautiful sunny days. He reflects on the powerlessness of his position, and imagines the dangers that lurk outside his domain, wondering what he would do if faced with the violence that echoes from behind the mountains.
The song is a reflection on the fragility of life and the ambiguity of political and social structures. The cook represents a marginal figure who watches from the background as the world unfolds, and his musings highlight the uncertainty and precariousness of existence. The women who come and go in the hotel represent the transience and beauty of life, and their presence creates a contrast with the violence and chaos of the outside world. Francesco De Gregori's lyrics are evocative and poetic, and they convey a sense of longing, nostalgia, and melancholy that is both powerful and haunting.

Arriving from Venice and coming here

When the door closes
Ed allora le immagino nude aspettare
And then I imagine them waiting naked
