He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes.
His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers.

Greca, nascesti a New York
Ti accoglievano navi, aerei e treni
Invidie, gelosie e devozione
The lyrics to Franco Battiato's song Casta Diva tell the story of a woman, possibly a famous singer, who was born in New York but spent her childhood there without anything special happening. One day her mother, tired of America and her husband, took the family back to the land of the gods, which is presumably Italy. The woman was still a robust girl at this point and had no idea of the divinity inside of her. However, she soon became successful and danced with it until the early hours of the morning. The music will never forget her. She traveled the world, traversing nautical, aerial, and terrestrial modes of transportation. Along the way, she encountered envy, jealousy, and devotion. Despite her talents, serenity and talent were taken from her by a despicable person.
The lyrics repeat the phrase "un vile ti rubò," or "a vile person stole from you," reinforcing the idea that someone took something important from this divinity with a supreme voice. As the song draws to a close, the chorus is repeated and the story of the woman's life, from her robust childhood in America to her travels around the world and the theft of her talent, is told once again. The song ends with the idea that this woman's temporary world has impacted the listener on a bone-deep level.
