He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes.
His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers.

carico di umidità,
io mi abbandono ai miei pensieri,
né pentimenti o verità...
Il cervello si fonde alle tue menzogne
mi indigno per la tua violenza,
e reclamo l'oblio,
un po' di pietà...
Settembre mi ascolta
piovoso e instabile.
Aspetto ancora il mio momento,
che presto verrà:
un luogo nel mondo,
giusto per ingannare,
la freccia che mi ucciderà.
Mio capitano andiamo avanti.
L'ardore dei miei sensi
eternamente ritorna,
con severo disordine.
La febbre per le membra.
La voluttà finale della verità
o di un colpo di pistola?
Alla fine di Settembre
carico di umidità,
mi lascio andare al mio destino,
senza rimorsi, in libertà.
Il mio io si riprende
la sua monotonia.
La luce si illumina
in fondo ai viali.
Aspetto ancora il mio momento
aspettando l'inverno.
The lyrics of Franco Battiato's song "Emma" delve deep into introspection and contemplation, capturing the essence of the singer's emotional journey as they navigate through the complexities of life. The opening lines, "Alla fine di Settembre / carico di umidità," paint a vivid picture of the end of September, a time filled with dampness and humidity. This atmospheric setting serves as a metaphor for the singer's emotional state, suggesting a sense of heaviness and introspection.
The singer's inner turmoil is revealed as they express surrender to their thoughts without any regrets or truths holding them back. The merging of their brain with the falsehoods presented by another character evokes feelings of indignation and a desire for oblivion or mercy. This internal conflict mirrors a struggle for understanding and peace amidst the chaos of deception and violence.
As the narrative unfolds, the singer seeks solace in the changing seasons, particularly in the rainy and unstable month of September. They patiently await their moment, a place in the world that will provide distraction from the looming threat symbolized by "la freccia che mi ucciderà" (the arrow that will kill me). This impending danger represents the inherent risks and uncertainties of life, with the singer's resolve to continue forward echoed in the phrase "Mio capitano andiamo avanti" (My captain, let's move forward).
The lyrics further explore themes of desire, sensuality, and a quest for truth, juxtaposed with the possibility of a violent end expressed through phrases like "La voluttà finale della verità / o di un colpo di pistola?" (The final voluptuousness of truth / or of a gunshot?). The singer grapples with the cyclical nature of their passions and the inevitability of confronting harsh realities, reflecting a profound sense of introspection and self-discovery. Ultimately, the song concludes with a sense of acceptance and liberation, as the singer embraces their destiny without regrets, reclaiming their sense of self in a world illuminated by the promise of new beginnings.
