Substitute
FrankTurner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first girl that I fell for was a fair and faithful fighter
She smoldered with a will to save the world
I did my best to help her, yeah I stood shoulder to shoulder
On the front lines with my visionary girl

I wish that she had cared for me
But in the end her ideologies
Occupied the fortress of her heart
I wrote her 15 songs, but still we had to part

And if music was the food of love
Then I'd be a fat romantic slob
Well music, it's my substitute for love

The last girl that I loved she was a low and lusty liar
She set my heart on fire, but made me choke
Her beauty was a sight to see, but she didn't save it all for me
I found other fires by following the smoke

I wish that she had either cared for me or
Let me be
But she chased me from mind and from my home
I wrote her 16 songs, but I ended up alone

And if love is really all that we need
Then even all my singing is never gonna save me
Music it's my substitute for love

Well I've had many different girls inside my bed
But only one or two inside my head
These days I cuddle up to my guitar instead

But oh, what I would give, not to stumble but to really fall in love
And I could substitute my singing for the sound of someone sleeping next to me

Overall Meaning

The song "Substitute" by Frank Turner is a story about the two girls he loved, but eventually lost. The first girl was a fighter who had dreams of saving the world. Turner was inspired by her will and joined her in the front lines. However, her ideologies were more important to her than the relationship they shared, and they had to go their separate ways. The second girl was a liar who broke his heart. Despite her beauty, their relationship was tumultuous, and Turner found solace in music. He learned that love isn't all that we need, and music became his substitute for it.

The lyrics of the song show Turner's emotional journey and how music helped him cope with heartbreak. He talks about how he would have been a "fat romantic slob" if music was the food of love. Turner has had many girls in his bed, but only some have stayed in his head. He admits to cuddling up with his guitar these days and longs to fall in love again. Music has become the way he deals with his emotions and how he expresses himself.

Overall, "Substitute" is a song about love and loss, and how music can help us cope with the difficulties of life. It's a reminder that sometimes love isn't enough and that we need to find other ways to heal our broken hearts. The song showcases Turner's talent for storytelling and his ability to capture the complexities of human emotions.

In response to the comment thread from years ago we can no longer totally follow because of how YouTube changed things -

If anybody picks this up expecting something hardcore, listens to this, and doesn't either laugh their ass off or jam tf out, then that my friends is not a person worth worrying about

@MaXimumN1nja182

It's just a little visual joke for him. He's really into Hardcore and used to be in a HC band (Million Dead). Chill out.
