Summer Is Over
Frank Ifield Lyrics

The grass that was green is now hay
The world goes around without even a sound
And it looks like the summer is over
The rains tumble down in the sky
Young swallows have learned how to fly
The leaves that were green are no longer so green
The sun and the moon take turns in the sky
The days drift on by too soon
The meadows are kissed by a cool autumn mist
Far away now is June
The birds fly away to the sun
The leaves touch the ground one by one
The breeze hurries by without even goodbye
And it looks like the summer is over
The sun and the moon take turns in the sky
The days drift on by too soon
The meadows are kissed by a cool autumn mist
Far away now is June
The birds fly away to the sun
The leaves touch the ground one by one
The breeze hurries by without even goodbye
And it looks like the summer is over
And it looks like the summer is over
Frank Ifield's "Summer Is Over" is a nostalgic and wistful tribute to the end of summer. In the first verse, Ifield sings about the passing of time as night transitions into day and the green grass of summer fades away into hay. The world moves on without a sound as summer slowly dies. The second verse continues with this theme, describing the rain falling from the sky and the leaves turning colors before falling to the ground. With the summer coming to an end, the birds fly south for the winter and the breeze carries the last remnants of summer away.
In the chorus, Ifield expresses his sadness for the loss of summer, as the sun and moon continue to take turns in the sky while the days slip by too quickly. The meadows are now covered in a cool autumn mist, and the memory of June feels far away. The final verse repeats elements of the previous verses, emphasizing the finality of summer as the birds fly away and the leaves fall to the ground. The goodbye of summer is not acknowledged by the breeze as it hurries by, leaving only the sense that summer has indeed come to an end.
Overall, the song is a beautiful and melancholy tribute to the end of a joyful season. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the changes that take place as summer turns into autumn, and the longing for those warm and carefree days lingers on.

I rate this performance very highly. Frank was very popular in his day. He was my moms favourite male singer

Superb orchestration really complements Frank's great treatment of this.

Thanks Bill. I did this one for a fan who requested "Summer Is Over" and also "Lovesick Blues". Frank does a wonderful job with both tunes.

One of Frank's best in my opinion and should have gone much higher in the charts, but competition was pretty stiff back then. Can't believe nobody has posted Frank's other meteorological recording 'In The Snow.' That's a great song and performance as well.
