The Nearness of You
Frank Morgan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
All my wildest dreams come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you
The lyrics to Frank Morgan's "The Nearness of You" speak to the overwhelming feeling of being close to someone you love. The first stanza establishes that it is not external factors such as the moon or otherworldly events that exhilarate the singer, but rather being in the presence of the person they love. The second stanza doubles down on this sentiment, proclaiming that it is not even the words being spoken between the two lovers that is significant, but rather the mere "nearness" of each other.
The final stanza is the most explicit and romantic, describing the feeling of being held by the person they love as transcendent. Even without the need for "soft lights" or other mood-setting techniques, the singer is in awe of their partner and yearns for the chance to be even closer to them.
Overall, the lyrics to "The Nearness of You" take an ethereal and romantic approach to love, emphasizing the importance of being present with the people we care about and reminding us that even the smallest act of closeness can be transformative.

I was lucky to see Frank Morgan live five times - he was an artist of the highest caliber. The man wove a spell with his horn. Thankfully, we have his recordings. But what an astonishing live performer, what a spirit. Find everything you can by him.

Not only do Bosch, Mickey and I share the love of jazz, but I was born and raised in Los Angeles so I'm familiar with nearly all the locations and places they go and that really makes the it worth the price of admission! Mr. Connelly weaves great tales. Mr. Morgan is part of his lush musical score.

I had never heard Frank Morgan until several years ago when I started reading Michael Connelly's books about "Harry Bosch". Frank was Harry's favorite artist. Now I have Frank Morgan on my Pandora and listen regularly. Thank you Harry and Michael.

Same here! Almost done with Angel's Flight. The Bosch TV series is so excellent, now I'm getting into the books because I watched all 6 seasons and can't get enough. One of the books is read by Titus. I've always struggled with jazz appreciation, but finding these old school mellow recordings is a great gateway.

About to begin "The Concrete Blonde." So wonderful; the mellow, not-so-busy-noted, jazz such as this. Please give my "September Twelve" a listen. Hope it fits a mood.
