Lovecrimes
Frank Ocean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Talk to me and I better not hear a word
Do me baby, I better not feel it girl
Baby, I still got one bullet left in my nine
Finna do a lovecrime, lovecrime, finna do a lovecrime

Murder, murder, murder she wrote
Lovecrimes, lovecrimes
Murder, murder, murder she wrote
Lovecrimes, lovecrimes

You write me love letters with your father's pen
If he knew the freaky, freaky things that you write with it
Is it really wrong that I want to be the baby daddy?
Is that a lovecrime, lovecrime? Tell me it's a lovecrime

Murder, murder, murder she wrote
Lovecrimes, lovecrimes
Murder, murder, murder she wrote
Lovecrimes, lovecrimes
Murder, murder, murder she wrote
Lovecrimes, lovecrimes

In the getaway car
You know I love it when the ride is smooth
If we ever get caught
It'd be a long vacation for two

Murder, murder, murder she wrote
Lovecrimes, lovecrimes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Ocean's Lovecrimes are complex and intricate, and likely to have several interpretations. However, a major theme that stands out is the concept of taboo love - a love that is forbidden, seen as wrong, and carries with it the potential for violence. From the opening lines, "Talk to me and I better not hear a word, Do me baby, I better not feel it, girl," the lyrics set the tone for a tumultuous love affair, where the singer is asking for restraint and control from their partner. They then reveal their intention to commit a "lovecrime", which seems to imply that they will do something dangerous in the name of love.

The chorus, "Murder, murder, murder she wrote, Lovecrimes, lovecrimes," adds to the ominous nature of the song, with Frank Ocean's voice almost pleading for listeners to understand the gravity of the situation. The following verse tells of love letters written with a father's pen, implying a sense of power play and inappropriate behaviour. The singer then wonders if wanting to be the baby daddy is a "lovecrime," seeking validation for their potentially harmful desires. The song ends with a mention of a getaway car, where the thrill of escape is coupled with the fear of being caught.

Overall, Lovecrimes is a hauntingly beautiful song, with lyrics that suggest a love that is both dangerous and irresistible. Whether it is a warning, a confession, or a story that is open to interpretation, it captures the complexity of human emotion and desire.

"Talk to me
And I better not hear a word"

my perspective: Frank feels lonely and wants her to talk to, but not really. He just wants someone there. He doesn't really want to talk about shit, just to know that someone is there.

"Do me baby
Oh I better not feel it girl"

my perspective: Similar to the above line, Frank wants to feel loved and needed by someone but not necessarily through sex. He doesn't care about the actual act/feeling of sex (perhaps because he has had lots of it), rather he wants to be affirmed that she is there for him.

"Still got one bullet left
In my nine
finna do a love crime"

my perspective: Frank thinks that to find this true love he should get this girl pregnant. Perhaps then he would know that she can never leave. The whole song is him contemplating doing this. Example: "Is it really wrong, if I wanna be the baby daddy?"
Frank really just wants real, authentic love. He imagines it in the form of a family I'm assuming.
