Venting about his decision to drop the record his own way, he took to Twitter on March 1, 2011:
"i. did. this. not ISLAND DEF JAM. that's why you see no label logo on the artwork that I DID. guess its my fault for trusting my dumbass lawyer and signing my career over to a failing company. fuck Def Jam & any company that goes the length of signing a kid with dreams & talent w/ no intention of following through. fuck em. now back to my day. i want some oatmeal and toast. brunch swag."
As a member of the Odd Future (OFWGKTA) collective, his sound is distinctively soulful/r&b influenced, yet done in a way that could pass for something totally different. As Tyler, the Creator states, “It’s Smooth Ass Music About Bitches, Relationships And Being A Rich Young Nigga…But In A Swagged Out Way.”
Ocean was evacuated from the University of New Orleans to Los Angeles, California just as Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005, and stayed in Los Angeles to pursue a music career. Ocean joined Los Angeles based collective OFWGKTA, who he met through mutual friends, at the end of 2009. In the end of 2009, he met Tricky Stewart, who helped Ocean sign a contract with Def Jam Recordings as an artist, however, he was initially unable to build a relationship with the company. In 2010, he changed his name from Christopher "Lonny" Breaux to Christopher Francis Ocean via a legal website. In an April 2011 interview, Ocean intimated that his relationship with Def Jam has strengthened since the release of his mixtape. On April 28, 2011, Ocean was arrested on unspecified charges by the LAPD, and was released on the morning after on April 29, 2011. Ocean joined his OFWGKTA bandmates for the first time on tour from May 12 to May 19, 2011. On May 31, 2011, Def Jam released the single Novacane on iTunes soon followed by Swim Good Taken from his mixtape Nostalgia, ULTRA. His first 'proper' album, Channel Orange was released on July 17, 2012.
In 2016, he released the visual album Endless alongside his second studio album Blonde, following several years of delays. Blonde debuted at number one in the United States and United Kingdom.
In 2017, Ocean released several singles, including Chanel and Lens, through his Blonded Radio show, and made several appearances on other songs by artists like Calvin Harris, A$AP Mob, and Tyler, the Creator.
Whip Appeal

Buttercream Benz, goldfinger wheels
Driver can't steer, but look like Pam Grier
She like "Where's there parking around here"
That spots reserved, so are those right there
Reserved for who?
For pretty girls in sports cars
Pretty girl driving my sports car
Cause my license been suspended
Pretty girl driving my sports car
Got my feet up on the wood grain, roof missing
You've got that whip appeal
Whipping my stick, shift, gear
You'd be a gun but you're a girl
Only if whipping could kill
Up and down Mulholland, on the weekends we chill
You're driving with no shoes, cruise control
Love the way you take the wheel
Got your photo on my air freshener
In a sense just like the
Pretty girl driving my sports car
Cause my license been suspended
Pretty girl driving my sports car
Got my feet up on the wood grain, roof missing
You've got that whip appeal
Whipping my stick, shift, gear
You'd be a gun but you're a girl
Only if whipping could kill
She's on her way to get me, she's in traffic
She said give her 20 minutes (I'm finna hop in the shower)
Girl I hope 20 don't mean an hour
And as the cold water runs over my chest
I've been thinking 'bout your skirt on my head rest
Pretty girl driving my sports car
Pretty, roof missing
You've got that whip appeal
Whipping my stick, shift, gear
You'd be a gun but you're a girl
Only if whipping could kill
You've got that whip appeal
Whipping my stick, shift, gear
You'd be a gun but you're a girl
Only if whipping could kill
I let you drive my Benz
Flossing all your friends around town
I let you fill my seats with shopping bags
I let you go do your thing riding with your friends round town
Riding with your girlfriends
And I always keep it clean
So why don't you park in the front just to stunt
That'll make all them bitches mad
Why don't you lift up the roof just to stunt
It'll make all them bitches mad
All them girls wanna be you
You've got that whip appeal
Whipping my stick, shift, gear
You'd be a gun but you're a girl
Only if whipping could kill
The lyrics of Frank Ocean's song "Whip Appeal" depict a scenario where the singer is impressed by a woman who is both beautiful and skilled at driving sports cars. The song opens with the singer describing himself standing in front of the Supreme store as if he owns it, showcasing his confidence and pride. He then describes his luxury car, a Buttercream Benz with goldfinger wheels, and the driver who looks like Pam Grier, a famous actress known for her roles in action films. The woman asks about parking, and the singer reveals that the spots are reserved for pretty girls in sports cars, implying that she belongs there.
The chorus introduces the notion of "whip appeal," a term that refers to the attractiveness and skill one possesses while driving a car. The singer acknowledges that this woman possesses whip appeal, highlighting her ability to handle the car's stick shift and gears. He metaphorically compares her to a gun, stating that if whipping a car could kill, she would be lethal. The verses continue with references to the couple's adventures, such as driving up and down Mulholland Drive and the woman driving with no shoes and using cruise control. These details add to the carefree and enjoyable nature of their relationship.
The bridge of the song reveals that the singer just finished practice and is waiting for the woman to pick him up. He expresses concern that her promised arrival time of 20 minutes might actually mean an hour. As he showers, he imagines her skirt on his headrest, suggesting an intimate and playful connection between them.
The final verse shows the depth of the singer's admiration for this woman. He lets her drive his Benz, allowing her to show off to her friends. He also lets her fill the car with shopping bags and encourages her to park in front and lift the roof to make other people jealous. The song concludes by reiterating the woman's whip appeal and asserting that all the other girls want to be like her.
Overall, "Whip Appeal" is a song that celebrates the beauty, confidence, and driving skills of a woman, while also highlighting the singer's infatuation with her.
