Blue Skies
Frank Sinatra;Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue skies, smilin' at me
Nothin' but blues skies do I see

Bluebirds singin' a song
Nothin' but bluebirds all day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things looking so right
Noticing the days hurryin' by
When you're in love, my how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone
Nothin' but blue skies from now on

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things looking so right
Noticing the days hurryin' by
When you're in love, oh how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone
Nothin' but blue skies from now on

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from the song Blue Skies by Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey, evoke a sense of joy and contentment that comes from love. The blue skies and bluebirds symbolize the pleasant and hopeful demeanor that the singer has due to being in love. The verses describe how the days seem to pass by quickly when one is in love and how everything seems to be irradiated by the feelings of bliss that come from it. The singer expresses how they have never seen things so bright and right, which could signify how love brings clarity and a sense of purpose to one's life.

The chorus, which repeats the phrase "nothing but blue skies from now on" emphasizes how the singer's life has been transformed by love. They no longer experience "blue days," but rather only see blue skies, which could represent a newfound optimism that comes from being in a relationship. I love these old recordings! With all the technical advances which followed, something was lost- this has such muscle, punch and "honesty". It's there in your ears. happening right there and then. Those studio engineers really knew what they were doing! And so did the musicians. God, could those guys play...

@Broonzied

This take on this song is my favourite Frank number. Its all perfect. The vocal, the band, the backing, the feel and the arrangement. Perfect.

Some lady at the grocery store I work at complained about the music played over our intercom. Our boss agreed to make a change and started playing Jazz, Band, and Classical music. That how I discovered this song... Wish I had the chance to thank that lady

Thanks for posting these old songs -- it's very interesting to hear Sinatra in his very young years!

Without Tommy we may never  have had Frank, at least the Frank we know now for he contributed his phrasing and breath control from Tommy's playing.

Another story goes that he learned it from Jo Stafford when they were both with Dorsey but wouldn't admit he got so much of his sound from a woman. She was operatically trained and is renowned for the purity of her voice.
