Anchors Aweigh
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week
'Cause that's the night that my sweetie and i
Used to dance cheek to cheek
I don't mind Sunday night at all
'Cause that's the night friends come to call
And Monday to Friday go fast
And another week is past
But Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week
I sing the song that i sang for the memories i usually seek
Until i hear you at the door
Until you're in my arms once more
Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week

Mmmm... Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week
I sing the song that i sang for the memories i usually seek
Until i hear you at the door
Until you're in my arms once more
Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week

Until i hear you at the door

Until you're in my arms once more
Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Sinatra's song "Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week)" reflect the sentiments of someone who is missing their loved one. The singer describes how Saturdays have become the loneliest nights of the week because it is the night that they used to dance with their lover. Despite this, the singer doesn't mind Sunday nights because friends come to call, and the weekdays seem to go by quickly. However, nothing compares to the loneliness they feel on Saturdays, which is why they sing the song they usually sing when they are reminiscing about their memories. The singer's loneliness vanishes when they hear their lover at the door and they are in their arms once more.

The lyrics describe the universal human emotion of missing someone and the longing for their physical presence. Many people can relate to the feeling of Saturday nights being the loneliest night of the week, especially if they have experienced a loss or separation. The song captures the bittersweet feeling of missing someone and the joy of being reunited with them.

Gene had the looks the dance AND the Voice

@mollykoenig7009

Gene was a MASTER at choreographing for his partners. Frank, the darling, was only capable of so much, so Gene thought up flashy, quick, but technically relatively simple numbers to accommodate him. Comparing this to the routines he put together with Donald O'Connor in Singin' in the Rain? Miles apart, but damn Frank looks good here, don't he?

Remember when people used to sing like this? I enjoy today's variety because it adds diversity but there is such a charm and skill when it came to singing from the 40's.
