Angel Eyes
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, drink up all you people
Order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The drink and the laugh's on me

Try to think that love's not around
Still it's uncomfortably near
My old heart ain't gaining any ground
Because my angel eyes ain't here

Angel eyes, that old Devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say that my love's misspent
Misspent with angel eyes tonight

So drink up all of you people
Order anything you see
And have fun you happy people
The drink and the laugh's on me

Pardon me but I got to run
The fact's uncommonly clear
I got to find who's now the number one
And why my angel eyes ain't here

'Scuse me while I disappear

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra's "Angel Eyes" is a song that explores the themes of love, loss, and heartbreak in a classic way that only Sinatra could. The song's opening lines set the tone, with Sinatra addressing a group of people and encouraging them to enjoy themselves on his tab. However, it becomes clear that despite putting on a happy face and trying to pretend that everything is okay, there is deep sadness and longing in his heart. He reminisces about his love, described as having "angel eyes" that were sent by the devil because they are so irresistible. Despite his effort to move on, his heart is still stuck on this love.

The use of the phrase "angel eyes" is a metaphor for the object of Sinatra's affection. The term "angel" is typically used to describe someone who is good, pure, and holy. However, in this case, "angel eyes" are the complete opposite. Sinatra describes them as "glow[ing] unbearably bright," which suggests that they are intense, almost overpowering. He also suggests that his love for this person is "misspent" because they are not around. Sinatra's use of the phrase "my old heart ain't gaining any ground" is telling. It suggests that he is not making any progress in moving on from this person, and his broken heart is holding him back.

Overall, "Angel Eyes" is a classic ballad that explores the theme of unrequited love. Sinatra's longing and vulnerability are palpable in every line, and the song's melancholy melody and lyrics make it an enduring classic.

I never make comments on social media. I make this one exception. I came to this song out of despair, and Frank is always a friend.

I’ve been in Ukraine as a journalist. When I was there, my beautiful girlfriend Angel broke up with me. She was back in the states. She told me: “I’m a high-value woman looking for a high-value man.”

I have my flaws like everybody does. But I didn’t think I deserve that when I had bombs dropping around me.

She left me for a richer man. Now they’re in Budapest together and Vienna. I came back to see her but it was too late.

This song says everything. Thank you Frank.

Hey, drink up all you people
Order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The drink and the laugh's on me

Try to think that love's not around
Still, it's uncomfortably near
My old heart ain't gaining any ground
Because my Angel Eyes ain't here
Angel Eyes, that old devil's scent
They grow unbearably bright
Need I say that my love's misspent
Misspent with angel eyes tonight?

So, drink up all of you people
Order anything you see
And have fun you happy people
The drink and the laugh's on me

Pardon me, but I gotta run
The fact's uncommonly clear
I gotta find who's now the number one
And why my Angel Eyes ain't here
'Scuse me, while I disappear

Ava taught Sinatra how to sing a torch song. It all came together in this LP, you can feel his broken heart. He remained close to Ava their entire lives. 1958 and Frank’s voice is at its best, deeper. Nelson’s favorite work together. I concur....

He loved that wild eyed Southern Gal, truly, madly, deeply.😢🙏💕

I love him so so so much! One of my favorite singers ever and one of my idols and inspirations for singing. He was loved by so many and I feel like music like this needs to come back. I wish I was alive back then to witness him perform. 💖💖💖

Carys Marie but his music will never go away, because in an interview from the 89's Sinarta was asked, " how did he want to be remembered. He told the interviewer, i want someone to take this music and keep it going." That person is yours truly. I am a Frank Sinarta tribute artist and it's my mission to keep his music alive.

He is the best
