Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a fool and don't I know it?
But a fool can have her charms
I'm in love and don't I show it?
Like a babe in arms

Love's the same old sad sensation
Lately, I've not slept a wink
Since this silly situation
Has me on the blink

I'm wild again, beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered am I

Couldn't sleep, wouldn't sleep
Then love came and told me I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered am I

Lost my heart, but what of it?
She is cold, I agree
She might laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to her, bring spring to her

And long for the day when I'll cling to her
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I

Overall Meaning

The song "Bewitched Bothered And Bewildered" by Frank Sinatra is a classic love song that tells the story of a man who is completely besotted with a woman who he knows is foolish, but irresistibly charming. The opening lines of the song set the scene for the rest of the lyrics, with Sinatra acknowledging that the woman he is in love with is a fool, but that even fools can have their seductive qualities. He then goes on to express his overwhelming love for her, which he admits is obvious to anyone who sees him around her.

The chorus of the song, "Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered am I," perfectly sums up the sense of obsession and confusion that the singer is experiencing. He is clearly smitten with this woman, but also overwhelmed by his emotions and unable to think clearly. He describes himself as a "simpering, whimpering child," highlighting the way that his love for her has reduced him to a state of vulnerability and dependence. The song is underlined by a sense of melancholy, with the singer admitting that he has not been able to sleep since falling in love with this woman.

Despite the fact that the object of his affections is not particularly interested in him, Sinatra's character persists in his love for her. He describes himself as "lost" but unable to help himself, as he is fascinated by her even though she is "cold." He even goes so far as to say that he loves it when she laughs at him, showing the extent to which he is willing to put himself out there for her.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

on Try a Little Tenderness

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
