Dream Away
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When skies are cloudy and gray
They're only gray for a day
So wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away
Until that sunshine peeps through
There's only one thing to do
Just wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream all your troubles away

Your castles may tumble that's fate after all
Life's really funny that way
No use to grumble, smile as they fall
Weren't you king for a day
Just remember that sunshine always follows the rain
So wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away

Your castles may tumble that's fate after all
Life's really funny that way
But no need to grumble, smile as they fall
Weren't you king for a day
Just remember that sunshine always follows the rain

So wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream, dream your troubles away

Overall Meaning

The song "Dream Away" by Frank Sinatra is a heartfelt ballad about the importance of holding onto your dreams and never giving up hope. The lyrics encourage the listener to let their imagination run free and to never let the worries and challenges of life get in the way of their dreams. The song paints a picture of a world where love is fleeting and fragile, but where the beauty of life can be found in the endless possibilities of our dreams.

The opening lines, "Dream away, child; let your dreams run wild," set the tone for the song, urging the listener to embrace their inner child and never stop dreaming. The chorus repeats this sentiment, warning of the consequences of not dreaming: a life filled with worries and tears. The second verse speaks to the fragility of love and how even the strongest relationships can be broken if not treated with care.

The final verse urges us to "dream away" even when we feel like there is no room left to live inside ourselves. It is a call to never give up, even in the face of the most difficult challenges that life can throw our way. The song, though simple in its lyrics, is a powerful reminder of the importance of never losing sight of our dreams and the hope they bring.

Dream away, child; let your dreams run wild
Allow your imagination to soar and don't stifle your dreams, or else you'll be burdened by a lifetime of worry and stress.

Or a lifetime of worries might claim you.
If you don't allow yourself to dream and instead focus solely on the practicalities and stresses of life, you will be consumed by them.

For the last time we have tasted Love's sweet tears by the fire's glow.
We have recently experienced the emotional intensity of love, likely in a romantic relationship.

If our hearts are strong there'll be No long good-byes when it's time to go.
If we are truly committed to one another, we won't have to endure lengthy and sorrowful departures when the time inevitably comes for one of us to leave.

But the strongest torch is sometimes broken As the deepest vows aren't always spoken, And the greatest wounds, we hide inside ourselves Where they never show.
Even the most powerful relationships can be damaged or destroyed by hidden wounds and unspoken promises. Some pain is so deep it remains hidden within us.

When the Winter weds the Northern Wind The child they bear is snow. And the branches bow like worried bridesmaids But the trees will grow.
Winter weather can feel ominous and unsettling, but it is just a natural part of the cyclical patterns of the seasons. Just as trees can withstand snow and ice and continue to grow, we too can thrive despite hardships.

Sun and Earth in time will come together, God will give us back our summer weather, But the mem'ries of that first sweet Taste of love pass away so slow.
Even when life feels dark and cold, we can trust that the light and warmth will eventually return. However, the lingering memories of past relationships and romances can be slow to fade, even as we move on.

When there's no room left to live inside ourselves Do we dream away.
When we feel suffocated and constrained by our own lives, the act of dreaming and letting our minds wander can offer a sense of escape and freedom.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
