Mad About You
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here am I, mad about you, mad about you
I can't lie, I'm mad about you, mad about you
Though I said to my heart, don't fall
How I love the enchantment of it all

If you knew all the dreams I've had about you
Then you'd know that I've got it bad about you
Press your lips to my lips and hold me near, so near
Can't you see I'm mad about you, dear?

If you knew all those dreams I've had about you
Then you'd know that I've got it bad about you
Press your lips to my lips and hold me near, so near
Settle down, you, gad about, you

Please, don't make me sad about you
Can't you see I'm mad about you, dear?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Sinatra's song Mad About You express the singer's infatuation and longing for a particular person, who they cannot seem to get over. The repetition of "mad about you" emphasizes the intensity of the singer's feelings, and the admission that they "can't lie" about them implies a sense of desperation. The singer seems to have tried to resist their feelings, as indicated by the line "Though I said to my heart, don't fall," but the "enchantment" of their attraction was too strong to overcome.

The lyrics also suggest that the singer has been dreaming about the person they are mad about, indicating a deep and perhaps subconscious connection. The physical desire expressed in the lines "Press your lips to my lips and hold me near, so near" further emphasizes the singer's intense longing for connection. The final lines of the song, "Settle down, you, gad about, you / Please, don't make me sad about you / Can't you see I'm mad about you, dear?" express the singer's plea for the person they are mad about to reciprocate their feelings, and not to cause them further heartache.

Overall, the song captures the intense emotions of infatuation and longing, and the desire for connection and reciprocation of feelings that often accompany them.

Sinatra's take, only time, of Victor Young's haunting melody used so effectively in 1950 film noir Gun Crazy. This violent film was the obvious source of the even more violent Bonnie and Clyde. This Sinatra 78rpm version was for Columbia records, reissued on 33 rpm LP Adventures of the Heart.

I was so happy to find that it was Mr. Sinatra that recorded this great song from one the most quintessential Film-Noir films of all time.
