Overture
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now this could only happen to a guy like me
And only happen in a town like this
So may I say to each of you most gratefully
As I throw each one of you a kiss

This is my kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of people too
People who smile at you

And each time I roam, Chicago is
Calling me home, Chicago is
Why I just grin like a clown
It's my kind of town

My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of razzmatazz
And it has, all that jazz

And each time I leave, Chicago is
Tuggin' my sleeve, Chicago is
The Wrigley building, Chicago is
The union stockyard, Chicago is

One town that won't let you down
It's my kind of town

Overall Meaning

The song “My Kind of Town” by Frank Sinatra Jr. is a tribute to the singer's hometown: Chicago. In the first few lines, Sinatra highlights the unique experience that has befallen him as an individual in this town, sentimentalizing Chicago's irreplicable aura. He then turns to address the people, thanking them for their open hearts, using an upbeat melody and jubilant lyrics to summon the spirit of the Windy City. The lyrics are a love letter to the sights, sounds, and feel of this bustling city, noting that the people there are friendly, welcoming and even inviting. The song speaks to something universal – humans' attachment to the place they come from and those who inhabit it, the joys and the trials within it, and the irreplaceable sense of belonging. By the end of the song, Sinatra has made an impassioned case for Chicago as truly one of a kind, urging listeners to come and experience all that this metropolis has to offer.

“My Kind of Town” employs a catchy, upbeat melody that complements the lyrics perfectly, evoking the sense of enthusiasm Sinatra has for his hometown. The song was written in 1964 by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, the duo most famous for penning the holiday classic “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score in 1965, which was shared by Nelson Riddle, who orchestrated the score for Robin and the 7 Hoods, the film in which Sinatra sang the song. The song has since gone on to become a beloved standard, covered by everyone from Tony Bennett to Rosemary Clooney. The impact of “My Kind of Town” on the cultural consciousness of America cannot be overstated. To this day, the song's joyful melody continues to evoke a sense of goodwill and a love for the people and places that make us feel at home.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

on Try a Little Tenderness

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
