Some Enchanted Evening
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some enchanted evening, you may see a stranger
You may see a stranger across a crowded room
And somehow you know, you know even then
That somewhere you'll see her again and again

Some enchanted evening, someone may be laughing
You may hear her laughing across a crowded room
And night after night, as strange as it seems
The sound of her laughter will sing in your dreams

Who can explain it, who can tell you why?
Fools give you reasons, wise men never try

Some enchanted evening, when you find your true love
When you feel her call you across a crowded room
Then fly to her side and make her your own
Or all through your life you may dream all alone

Once you have found her, never let her go
Once you have found her, never let her go

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra's "Some Enchanted Evening" is a classic romantic song that describes the feeling of meeting someone special and knowing that you are bound to meet again. The lyrics speak of the enchantment of the moment, of how you might be in a crowded room and suddenly see a stranger, someone you've never met before. Yet something in your heart stirs within you, and you feel that the connection you share with this person goes deeper than what you can perceive. The lyrics suggest that irrespective of how short and fleeting the meeting might be, you know that you will see her again and again.

The song's chorus then goes on to describe how, in some enchanted evening, you may hear her laughter, and that sound will sing in your dreams night after night. The feeling of knowing that you've found someone special is powerful and inexplicable, as the lyrics suggest. There's a powerful sense of romanticism and longing in this song that still resonates with people even today, more than half a century after it was first released.

The song's haunting melody is paired perfectly with these lyrics, making it an enduring classic that has stood the test of time. Even after all these years, "Some Enchanted Evening" is still one of the most beloved romantic ballads of all time.

Ah what an amazing version of this lovely song. My grandfather passed away yesterday leaving his wife of 65 years and this was always their song. Every time it would play they would hold hands. I'll never forget it. Love Frank too.
