The Best Is Yet To Come
Frank Sinatra & Count Basie & His Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You came along and everything started'in to hum
Still it's a real good bet
The best is yet to come
Best is yet to come and babe won't that be fine
You think you've seen the sun
But you ain't seen it shine
A wait til the warm up's under way
Wait til our lips have met
And wait til you see that sunshine day
You ain't seen nothing yet
The best is yet to come
And babe won't it be fine
Best is yet to come
Come the day you're mine
Come the day you're mine
I'm gonna teach you to fly
We've only tasted the wine
We're gonna drain the cup dry
Wait til your charms are right for these arms, to surround
You think you've flown before
But baby you ain't left the ground
Wait till you're locked in my embrace
Wait til I draw you near
And wait til you see that sunshine place
Ain't nothing like it here
The best is yet to come
And babe won't it be fine
The best is yet to come
Come the day you're mine
Come the day you're mine
And you're gonna be mine
The lyrics to Frank Sinatra's song "The Best Is Yet to Come" embody the theme of optimism and hope for what the future holds. The opening lines "Out of the tree of life I just picked me a plum, you came along and everything started'in to hum" suggest that the singer has found a valuable and enjoyable aspect of life and that the arrival of the person in question has only enhanced that experience. However, the singer then asserts that despite these positive experiences, the best is yet to come. The lyrics "wait till the warm up's under way, wait till our lips have met, and wait till you see that sunshine day, you ain't seen nothing yet" suggest that the best experiences are still to come, and that the current experiences are only a prelude to what is yet to come.
The chorus "best is yet to come and babe won't that be fine, you think you've seen the sun, but you ain't seen it shine" further reinforces the theme of hope and optimism, suggesting that the singer sees a bright future with the person in question. The idea of "draining the cup dry" further emphasizes this sense of looking forward to future experiences, and the lyrics "wait till your charms are right for these arms, to surround, you think you've flown before but baby you ain't left the ground" suggest that the singer believes the best is yet to come in terms of their relationship with the person in question. The repetition of "come the day you're mine" also emphasizes the sense of anticipation for this future event.

My favourite video of The Chairman of The Board.
With Count Basie on the piano, a superb arrangement from Quincy Jones, and a band showing how Swing, (Pure Swing!) should be played. Frank knew he was in the presence of supreme musicians in their own right. Marry that with a voice like Ole Blue Eyes and its the closest to perfection for me!
Frank had a great time doing that. You can tell. It's not only in his voice, it's in his overall performance. His moves, his face and in his eyes........
So glad we have this on video to watch....over and over 🎶🎤🎶🎤🎶
God Bless You Frank. You are, and will forever remain truly 'The Voice of a Century' 🎤 ❤ RIP 💋
