When I Fall In Love
Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I fall in love,
It will be forever,
Or I'll never fall in love.

In a restless world,
Like this is,
Love is ended
Before it's begun.
And too many moonlight kisses,
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun.

When I give my heart,
It will be completely,
Or I'll never give my heart.

And the moment I can feel that,
You feel that way too,
Is when I fall in love with you.

And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way too,

Is when I fall in love...
With you.

Overall Meaning

The song When I Fall In Love by Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe speaks about the singer's desire for a steadfast and everlasting love. The lyrics suggest that the singer has not yet fallen in love because love is difficult to find and maintain in a "restless world" where moonlight kisses can quickly be forgotten in the light of day. However, the singer knows that when they do fall in love, it will be forever, and they will give their heart completely.

The lyrics highlight the importance of reciprocation in love with the phrase, "And the moment I can feel that, You feel that way too, Is when I fall in love with you." The singer recognizes that falling in love is not a one-way street, and both parties must share the same feelings for it to be true love. This line hints at the vulnerability and risk of falling in love, as it requires both parties to be equally invested.

Overall, the song's lyrics convey the longing for a love that will stand the test of time, despite the challenges that may come. It emphasizes the importance of mutual affection and commitment in a relationship, reminding us that love requires more than moonlight kisses and fleeting feelings.

This song shows up on nearly every compilation CD out there attributed to Marilyn.
However, it is not her singing and most fans have noticed the obvious differences in the
singing styles.
It is a Sandra Dee recording of the song that has been attributed to Marilyn Monroe on most of her
CD releases since 1985. This was Sandra's very first record release in 1960.
The record wasn't a hit and thus became an obscurity.
Why the song was ever included on Marilyn's CDs to begin with is now the mystery.

ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA: Contrary to popular belief, Monroe did not ever record the song "When I Fall In Love". The version widely attributed to her and included on many compilation CDs was actually recorded in 1960 by actress Sandra Dee.

Lamentable error de la industria disquera. Es una estupidez atribuir una canción a otra persona solo por su similitud en la voz.

Regrettable mistake of the record industry. It is stupid to attribute a song to another person just because of its similarity in the voice.

Marilyn's voice is truly breathy! As beautiful as this voice is it does not sound like Marilyn. As the world and those here all adore Marilyn, I have one question - Why would the recording companies still want to perpetuate an error - to add to the mystery of Marilyn? Why not give the credit to where it belongs. Both stars died way too young. Loved by all. Nothing can detract from this one sad fact - Talent and beauty is missed.

This isn't Marilyn, obviously. Marilyn had a wonderful singing voice. Though inconsistent in her acting, her vocal performances were usually flawless. When recording "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" she nailed it on the first take. Though musical director Lionel Newman was happy with this take, it was Marilyn who insisted on doing it 12 more times. It is her original first-take that you hear in the film, and on the record. Thanks Marilyn, you're the diamond.

I was a kid in the '50s. This is absolutely Sandra Dee singing. Plus it's nothing like Marilyn's voice.

There are some pictures of the record & picture sleeve of Sandra Dee's version of "When I Fall In Love." It is Sandra's recording of the song that was attributed to Marilyn Monroe on most of her CD releases since 1985. This was Sandra's very first record release in 1960. Wasn't a hit and thus became an obscurity. The song has been recorded by various artists over the years with Doris Day having the biggest hit with it. For Marilyn fans the song has remained a mystery for the past 20 plus years.
