Troubled
Frank Trumbauer and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all, is all around
Just like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Just like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All of your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you ever need a friend
Look around I'm sailing right behind
Just like a bridge over troubled water
I'll be there to lay me down

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon & Garfunkel convey a message of love and support through tough times. The song speaks to the struggles of life and how, even in the darkest of times, there is someone out there willing to help. Using poetic imagery, the lyrics compare the listener's hardships to troubled waters, which the singer vows to cross with them as a bridge of support. The song not only presents a message of comfort but also provides a sense of reassurance to those going through tough times. The repeated line, "I will lay me down," is particularly powerful, as it signifies the singer's willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of the listener.

The song was written by Paul Simon, who reportedly wrote it as a gesture of support to Art Garfunkel during a difficult period in his life. Released in January 1970, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" quickly became a commercial success and went on to win six Grammy awards. It has since become an iconic song, covered by numerous artists and used in various media, from movies to TV shows.

According to a letter written to Ralph Venable in 1938 Frankie said Natoli played the open trumpet and Berigan the muted solo. No reason to believe that Natoli couldn't play that solo at the end of the record.

Joe Veltre

Great tune with fine Berigan solo beginning at 2:11.

That's Natoli not Berigan.
