The group's debut single, titled "Relax", was famously banned by the BBC and subsequently topped the U.K. singles chart for five weeks, enjoying prolonged chart success throughout 1984. Following the phenomenal follow-up success of "Two Tribes" and "The Power of Love", the latter being an emotional ballad experiencing seasonal resurgence over the years, FGTH became only the second act in the history of the UK charts to reach number one with their first three singles.
Things began to unravel in 1985 when their fourth single, "Welcome To The Pleasuredome", stalled at number two (success that many other groups would deeply envy, but they faced massive expectations). Their second (and final album), called 'Liverpool', took over a year to complete, reportedly at huge expense. The lead-off single, "Rage Hard", peaked at number four, and it was clear that the public had began to move on. 'Liverpool' sold poorly, despite critical acclaim and underground song plays, and conflict between lead singer Holly Johnson and the rest of the band led to an acrimonious split.
Johnson embarked on an initially successful solo career, but he quickly spiraled into obscurity. The rest of the band broke up completely after several attempts to recruit a new lead singer. Nonetheless, the group had proved hugely influential. Their three number one singles have been extensively remixed and repackaged over the years, and, despite their limited back catalogue, the band is generally seen as being one of the defining moments of the eighties. Numerous new wave and post-punk music revivalists look back to their aggressive yet stylish sound as an inspiration. The band is also known today for having a hit video game based around them for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64, giving them an interesting spot in video gaming history.

Young and strong on the wings of tomorrow
Rise up in millions, get off your knees
Dispelling the demons
In the valley of danger
We all work together, sculptures in sorrow
With love light to follow, on
(Rage hard) Into the light
(Rage hard) Doing it right, doing it right
(Rage hard) Against the dark
(Rage hard) Make your mark
Let the tournament begin
Don't give up and don't give in
Strength to rise up, strength to win
Strength to save the world from losing
(Rage hard) Into the light
(Rage hard) Doing it right
(Rage hard) Against the dark
(Rage hard)
(Rage)
(Rage hard)
The blue eyes of children
They shine without fear
Hope is the future, with oceans of cheer
(Nothing to fear) There's nothing to fear
The laughter of angels resounding from heaven
Keep fighting the favours
Of charlatan saviours, charlatan saviours
(Rage hard) Into the light
(Rage hard) Doing it right, doing it right
(Rage hard) Against the dark
(Rage hard) Make your mark
Let the tournament begin
Don't give up and don't give in
(Rage hard) Into the light
(Rage hard) Doing it right
(Rage hard) Against the dark
(Rage hard) Make your mark
I don't know which way to go
My love's like driven snow
When we past the test of time
My love you shall be mine
And if only, lost and lonely
Is all that's wrong with me, we'll be free
Be free, be free
Laugh like the head of Apollo
Young and strong on the wings of tomorrow
(Rage hard)
(Rage hard)
Let the tournament begin
Don't give up and don't give in
(Rage hard) Into the light
(Rage hard) Doing it right
Let the tournament begin
Don't give up and don't give in
Strength to rise up, strength to win
Strength to save the world from losing
The song 'Rage Hard' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood is a rousing call to action, urging listeners to rise up and fight against their problems. The repeated use of 'Rage Hard' throughout the song is a mantra that encourages the listener to never give up and always remain strong. The opening lines, 'Laugh like the head of Apollo, Young and strong on the wings of tomorrow' are a reference to the Greek god Apollo, one of the most important deities in ancient mythology. These lines suggest that the listener should be filled with confidence, strength and vitality, ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.
The lyrics 'In the valley of danger, We all work together, sculptures in sorrow' invoke images of people working together to create something beautiful despite the difficulties they face. The line 'With love light to follow, on, Sweet head of Apollo' refers to the idea that love and inspiration are like the light that guides us through the darkness. By coming together and working towards a shared goal, we can overcome any obstacle we face. The lines "let the tournament begin, Don't give up and don't give in, Strength to rise up, strength to win, Strength to save the world from losing" is a message that calls on people to take action against the forces that threaten our world.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right
Because their words have forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright,
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught, and sang the sun in flight,
And learned too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men at death who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you my father there, on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears I pray
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Trevor Horns production in this song is next level. Ahead of its time. ⭐️🪄
@gmikro
This one was actually produced by Stephen Lipson.
@neiledwards4923
He didn't produce it. His assistant Stephen Lipson produced the entire album, much to the band's annoyance.
@antster1983
@@neiledwards4923 Stephen Lipson let the band play their own instruments on Liverpool. Trevor Horn restricted the band's involvement on Pleasuredome to jumping into a swimming pool to create the splash sound on "Relax".
@Stiffjab71
A Masterpiece from one of the most underrated band ever
@andyschmelter3489
Underrated? They were HUGE!
@Stiffjab71
@Andy Schmelter I agree 100%. All I'm saying is that far worse bands went straight into stardom and they didn't. Ciao!
@andyschmelter3489
What do you mean, they didn't? Of course they did! Biggest new one band of 1984.
@superbobbytaylor6072
Underrated? They were the biggest band on the planet for a solid year.
@Stiffjab71
@SuperBobby Taylor Exactly. For just a year when last decent U2 album was Joshua Tree but they are still superstardom material (sob). Ciao
