My Desire
Frankie Laine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To spend one night with you in our old rendezvous,
And reminisce with you that's my desire.
To meet where gypsies play, down in that dim cafe,
And dance 'till break of day that's my desire.
We'll sip a little glass of wine, I'll gaze into your eyes divine.
I'll feel the touch of your lips pressing on mine.
To hear you whisper low just when it's time to go,
Cherie, I love you so, that's my desire.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Frankie Lane's song That's My Desire talk about a deep longing for a romantic encounter with a special someone. The singer expresses his desire to spend one night with the person he loves, in a place where gypsies play and where they can reminisce about their past. He wants to dance until the break of day with this person and sip wine with them, gazing into their eyes and feeling the touch of their lips. Before they leave, he wants to hear them whisper those three special words: "I love you."

The lyrics convey a sense of yearning and passion, as if the singer has been waiting a long time to be with this person. He describes the perfect setting for their encounter, down to the tiniest detail, and imagines how it would feel to finally be together. The song is a classic ballad that speaks to the universal human experience of longing for intimacy and connection with another person.

Mark Gallagher

Hey Mark,

Hope you're doing well. My real name is Bert by the way..  Who know's who saw the slap besides my mother, but I know the story was told many times. It happened back stage according to her.  I can definitely see an Italian mother doing that back then, she was upset he didn't win, his Mom could have felt he disrespected her, who know's. One time my mother took my sister by the hair and pulled her down the street in front of all her friends just because she had eye makeup on, my sister was 16 at the time, now 69. That's just the way many of them were, very, very strict, and very prideful. I know, crazy!!
Now I'm going to have to ask my mother again, I'll see what she actually
remembers. By the way, her maiden name was Ventura, Mercedes Ventura. If you find anything out please let me know.

Thank so much for the email Mark, I really do apreciate it!!!

Bert

I was about 14 when one of my brothers brought home one of his LPs & I got 3 more later. I saw him perform in a small theater in Lathan, NY about 1975 & he was great.

My Dad was a nightclub entertainer in the 50s and 60s ... he was an "imitator" and Frankie Laine was his favorite. Listening to this is like listening to my Dad. I really miss him.
