Alice Blue Gown
Frankie Masters and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I once had a gown it was almost new, oh, the daintiest
Thing, it was sweet Alice blue; with little forgetmenots
Placed here and there, when I had it on, I walked on the air,
And it wore, and it wore, and it wore, till it went and it
Wasn't no more.

In my sweet little Alice blue gown
When I first wandered down in to town
I was both proud and shy, as I felt every eye, but in every shop
Window
I'd primp, passing by;

Then in manner of fashion I'd frown
And the world seemed to smile all around

Till it wilted I wore it, I'll always adore it, my sweet little
Alice blue gown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Frankie Masters and His Orchestra's song Alice Blue Gown are a nostalgic and sentimental reflection on a dress that the singer once owned. The dress was a pale blue color, which the singer describes as "Alice blue," and was adorned with small forget-me-not flowers. The singer felt confident and beautiful when wearing the dress, and felt like she was "walking on air." However, over time, the dress became worn and eventually fell apart, leaving the singer with fond memories.

Despite the simplicity of the lyrics, there are several possible interpretations. One possible interpretation is that the dress represents the singer's youth and innocence. She looks back fondly on her younger days and the confidence she felt while wearing the dress. Another interpretation is that the dress represents a lost love or the memory of a lost relationship. The use of the forget-me-nots could symbolize the singer's desire to hold onto a memory of someone who has passed out of her life.

I used to have a beautiful new dress, made in a delicate, light blue shade called Alice Blue, with cute little forget-me-nots embroidered on it. Every time I wore it, I felt like I was floating on air. But I wore it often, and eventually it became worn out and couldn't be worn anymore.

When I first wore my Alice Blue dress around town, I felt a mix of confidence and shyness. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, but I still took the opportunity to admire myself in shop windows as I passed by.

Then in manner of fashion I'd frown And the world seemed to smile all around Till it wilted I wore it, I'll always adore it, my sweet little Alice blue gown
I would pretend to be unimpressed with the dress, as if it was nothing special or out of the ordinary, but it always brightened my day and made the world seem like a better place. Even when it eventually became too worn out to wear, I will always cherish my memories of my sweet little Alice Blue dress.

Thank you for posting! My grandmother had dementia but remembered songs from her youth, the last time I went to visit her she had no idea who I was but sang all the words to Alice Blue Gown.

My dad always sang this song to my mom thanks for playing it

Tommy

This is my favorite version of this song.... While I like the more upbeat renditions, this one stays true to the original waltz -- and does so with a mighty fine sweet big band and a "girl singer" with the most beautiful of singing voices!

Felino Reyes

Love the vibes of this song <3

I LOVE Frankie Masters Orchestra---he "got" what Sweet Bands captured to us who love the Sweet Bands--lilting, plaintive female vocals, great tunes, and a top shelf Orchestra. I particularly love the "Wizard of Oz" tunes, "Merry Old Land of Oz," and "If I Only Had a Brain."

You are my GO TO on all vocals and Sweet Bands, and the information gleaned is astounding!
Thank you---more of: Andy Russell, Gray Gordon, Sammy Kaye, Kay Kyser, Guy Lombardo, Buddy Clark, Tony Martin, Frankie Masters, Kenny Baker, Dick Todd, Johnnie Johnston please, The78Prof!

I'm particularly, specifically looking for Tony Martin's "I'm Stepping Out, With a Memory Tonight," and ANY AND ALL Stephen Foster tunes sung by crooners, and ranging from Nelson Eddy, Bing, Dennis Day to Steve Lawrence, Eddie Fisher and Robert Goulet.

Mary Harrison

We had this piece on our old player piano roll.
