The band first experienced chart success when their second single "Take Me Out" reached #3 in the UK Charts, followed by their debut album Franz Ferdinand which entered the UK album chart at #3. The band went on to win the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two BRIT Awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. NME named Franz Ferdinand as their Album of the Year. From the album, three top-ten singles were released, "Take Me Out", "The Dark of the Matinée" and "This Fire". The band has also received several Grammy Award nominations.
The band is named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination was one of the main reasons for the start of the First World War. The band decided on the name after seeing a racehorse named Archduke Ferdinand win the Northumberland Plate in 2001, eventually coming to the decision as the alliteration and sound of the name appealed to them.

For those who say it's sexist: this is a song about the attitudes of boys and girls in relationships. In the first half of the song, Alex is singing in the perspective of a guy who sees women as objects and thinks that women should just go out with him. Then in the verse that starts "Sometimes I say stupid things" it is the guy realising that he is wrong and that he should consider how the girl feels. Then the final chorus which changes to "no you boys" is showing how the attitudes of boys in a relationship needs to change. Listen to the lyrics and it is pretty simple.

I mean, you can even see it in the video. In the first 3/4, the women are shot in a very sexy way, like some kind of beautiful objects. The lightning and editing hides all their imperfections and they look almost superhuman. And in the last part, the lighting completely changes, reveals that all of them are different colors and shapes, and suddenly makes them look like... people. Both the song and the video are pretty smart!
