The band first experienced chart success when their second single "Take Me Out" reached #3 in the UK Charts, followed by their debut album Franz Ferdinand which entered the UK album chart at #3. The band went on to win the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two BRIT Awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. NME named Franz Ferdinand as their Album of the Year. From the album, three top-ten singles were released, "Take Me Out", "The Dark of the Matinée" and "This Fire". The band has also received several Grammy Award nominations.
The band is named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination was one of the main reasons for the start of the First World War. The band decided on the name after seeing a racehorse named Archduke Ferdinand win the Northumberland Plate in 2001, eventually coming to the decision as the alliteration and sound of the name appealed to them.

You know I'm here waiting for you
I'm just a cross hair
I'm just a shot away from you
And if you leave here
You leave me broken, shattered, I lie
I'm just a cross hair
I'm just a shot, then we can die
I know I won't be leaving here with you
I say don't you know
You say you don't know
I say, take me out!
I say you don't show
Don't move, tide is low
I say, take me out!
I say you don't know
You say you don't know
I say, take me out!
I know I won't be leaving here (with you)
I know I won't be leaving here
I know I won't be leaving here (with you)
I know I won't be leaving here with you
The lyrics of Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" present an intriguing blend of desperation and desire, mixing the feeling of falling apart with a sense of urgency to be together with someone. The singer speaks directly to a lover, assuring them that they are there for them if they are lonely, but also warning them that leaving would leave him shattered. He paints a picture of himself as a weapon, just a crosshair aimed at his lover, suggesting that their relationship is intense and possibly even dangerous. The line "I'm just a shot, then we can die" echoes this sense of volatility, the idea that their love might be potentially fatal.
The chorus of the song acts as both an invitation and a command, with the singer asking to be taken out while also demanding it. There's a sense of frustration and anger as he accuses his lover of not showing or moving, and the repetition of the command to be 'taken out' reinforces the urgency of the situation. The final lines of the song are particularly poignant, with the singer acknowledging that he won't be leaving here with his lover, suggesting that their relationship may be doomed, but also holding onto a sense of hope and desire for something more.
Overall, "Take Me Out" is a powerful and passionate song that taps into the complexities of love, desire, and the fear of losing someone. Through its lyrics, it offers a raw and intense look at the tumultuous emotions that come with being in a relationship.
